i need to rant . i own a few video games stores ( no im not rich) and if your a independant store you get screwed when it comes to new games. so when gamestop broke street date on call of duty most of the game companys said ok no distributers can have there games till monday , tuesday is new release day, so we have to have them overnighted now costing me more money , and the games can show up anytime of the day , yet gamestop
gets there games in time for midnight releases ( the same day as distributers) , im starting to think there is no way to compete with them,

Gamestops hate mom and pop used game stores. You can always offer $5 more trade and price your used $5 to $10 less then those scrubs. Also you need to find a niche. You should know that new games dont bring profits to the video game market, they bring in the customers that have tons of trades!

Rony,
Where are you stores located and do you do any business online. I am always interested in buying from a mom and pop place before the huge companies.

Im with ya I dont really like gamestop I hate their preorder propaganda. I thought most retailers get the big releases early. I got ff13 a week early from mom an pop retailer. I feel for ya it sucks gamestop is the only competition in town no more Babbages, Ebx, Funcoland, and Gamecrazy is going down fast. At one time most of these stores were in the Mall of America now only Gamestop remains.

mine are in western nc , i dont do any online stuff yet . i need to look into it for sure, i just found out gamestop is moving about 100 yards from my best store .

Gamestop owned Babbages, Ebx, Funcoland. I'm not certian about gamecrazy

Weird I though they bought all of these companies, Like I said in a previous post all of these stores except gamecrazy where in the same mall at the same time.

Eh,while I don't hate Gamestop,I don't really buy from them as I think their games are overpriced. Two things that I think are absolute rip-offs are the trade-ins and the price of the used games.

I've seen used games for slightly below the price of buying it new. That is an insult! A lot of them aren't even come complete. Why in the hell would I buy a used game for like $2-3 less for one I could buy brand spanking new? Especially when these used games look like they took a beating before they were resold.

Trade-ins are a joke too. While I know they can't buy games for close to what you paid because they'd go out of business,at least make a decent offer on them.Buying a like new complete game from someone for like $5 and then GS reselling it for a anywhere from $20-$50? No thanks....ever.I'll just ebay it thank you.

With game companies working towards making used game sales harder to pull off, Gamestop might lose ground. I think EA is making it so that if you buy a used game, you only get so much for the price of a used game that it's a better deal to just buy it new:

I have heard this strategy referred to as "project ten dollar". Essentially, the original purchaser of a game will get a code that will entitle him to some free DLC, while subsequent purchasers of the same copy of said game in the used market will be out of luck or will have to pay for the DLC if they want it. I buy some used games, but not a lot, and I still don't like this.

I rarely buy from GS unless they have some preorder bonus I want, and that's rare. More than anything else, I hate their practice of opening games and selling them as new. They've tried to do this to me a number of times and I just walk out.

The fact of the matter is, if I bought a brand new game from them (a sealed one), opened it right in front of them, then told them I wanted to return it, what do you think they'd do? They'd give me what they would if I were selling it as used, even though the game is clear still new. It is also common practice for employees to take games home and play them, bring them back, and sell as new. Much like Sam Goody used to do.

That place is bullshit. I miss FuncoLand. And Babbages. And Software Etc. And whatever other places they've acquired that I never made it to.

I too have a dislike for Gamestop. I bought a couple of good things from there but seriously they were only things with really good prices. Such as my complete in box Game Boy Micro for $30, a complete copy of F-Zero GX for $5 and then I'll buy 3 "new" games that I want used when they have buy two get one free.

The place just irks me though. Like how they push so hard for you to be a member and how I have to listen to 20 freakin questions and comments about how much I could save if I were a member and if I want to reserve any games coming up. If I really wanted to reserve a game I would know about it before I came in the store a-hole. And if I didn't know about it I would likely see the huge-ass poster in the window or hanging up and be like hey I should reserve a copy of that.

There are some chill employees but there are just as many who treat you like you don't know shit. I love it when the good ones actually look and say hey don't you love that game? Or I played the other two in the series but I haven't gotten to that one yet. The only incentive to go there really is the atmosphere...which rarely happens. If I'm buying some obscure random game I'm not your everyday know nothing customer.

The place isn't all bad but they don't really offer anything special to any demographic of the gaming population. Funcoland was awesome, so was Electronics Boutique. They had tons of used games and EB even sold crazy things like games in Japanese. It bothers me that 99% of game stores are Gamestops...I feel like they need a good competitor.

Support the small mom and pop stores and boycott gamestop! Although i have been known to get my supply of rare hard to finds from gamestop to sell in my store.
