Eye Asteroids

Holy Shit! No way!

No joke...I was just thinking to myself last night "arcades need simple games again which offer a new means of controls". I was thinking that playing a pac-man/maze-style game by looking in the direction that pac-man should travel would be fun and effective. I was thinking that some sort of retina scanner would track where the eyes move to and would interpret that on screen. Wow. Wonder if this would catch on? The only downer for gameplay like this is that the player couldn't just "look around" and enjoy other things on screen. They'd have to concentrate too much.

EDIT: before it comes out, let it be known I have several other concepts for arcade games. One of which would be holographic image screens in a cabinet with simple characters (a cross between Time Traveler and Pac-man) where you move the character and operate his functions by moving your hands or manipulating your fingers in such ways as to cause different actions to the character. There would be motion sensors setup around your hands. I will probably build concept models eventually in sketchup, not to mention the Tron: Ram's Revenge arcade game concept as well. ;)

This is where I thought arcade games would have progressed in the late 80's and early 90's......and kept arcades alive. It goes in line with technology too expensive to own in your home but worth it to experience for 25 or 50 cents a throw. I know that is why I played arcade games in the 70's and early 80's.....cutting edge graphics with awesome controllers, etc.....= FUN!

I'm ready for the GOZER-9000 Holographic Asteroids Machine......hell......I 'might' even pay 75 cents to play that! ;).

This Beta tester is ready.....

No joke, there's thought-controlled controllers being developed for game consoles that are probably coming to market in the near future, although I think you have to calibrate them for each user so I doubt they'll be coming to arcades.

I'm really suprised that virtual reality hasn't been exploited too much by the arcade markets yet, I think the technology is ready for it.

"Thought control" for video games has been kicked around since the Atari 2600 (the Mindlink by Atari), but has never amounted to much due to the lack of control compared to just simplest of joysticks. Short of general left/right movement, this isn't likely to happen anytime soon.

There have been a few attempts at arcade VR, Virtuality and Vortek had headset based games, but were both more of a novelty than a revolution. Part of the problem then, as it still is now, is that the headsets had limited resolution, limited field of vision or an extremely high cost. Even today there isn't a head mounted display that can supply HD resolution that would be affordable for an arcade system.
