Explain to me the appeal of Billy Mitchell

Good point and, yes, I do agree with you about the honesty. After doing some further research I did not realize how big of a "scandal" this is. It appears he cheated to get a name for himself, and likely did not realize how public information would be widely shared an easily criticized with the interest coming.

Honesty is always something everyone should strive for. A lie never benefits anyone even if we think we get away with it. You never know when you will be called out on it when someone proves you wrong.

I did not realize how important this issue was in the arcade community.
The other thing is that when he was caught he never owned up to it, he just kept doubling down on the lies. He's one of those guys that believe that you should never admit a mistake ever, even when caught red-handed.

Yep, and we see that a lot today. What is even more interesting is that people will actually defend someone that lies because of a desire to be a part of that culture. We are in interesting times.

We have a fantastic example of this playing out in the White House...

Clinical Narcissism (i.e., NPD) runs rampant in our society today. And it's more than just the White House. If you've ever known (or dated) anyone with this affliction, you realize most people who have it all have the same core traits. And they often form groups of complimentarily fucked up people around them, who are the yin to their yang.

Now we bring politics into the general forum area. I find it interesting that people talk smack about the President or whoever and yet have never put their life on public display. When put ourselves into the light we all would probably be an idiot compared to those that judge us from the dark.

Yeah, ok....

Frizz has a valid point, as the similarities between the two are pretty astounding.

I'm not saying he is wrong. I'm saying that if any of us were subjected to the scrutiny we would likely have people calling us idiots. If any of us could see what others did in secret it would be an ugly scene.

I still think, and if you've got KoK you should watch it again, Billy didn't come out and say that he was officially submitting that score... Walter(who asked the question, and we couldn't hear the answer) indicated that he was and went over to the computer to enter it. The thing is, "movie life" crossed over into "real life" at some point. That's where the problem came in. It's true, though, that Billy took that and ran with it.

Bastard..... beat me to it. :p

I'm not quite sure that's a "yin and yang" thing... Isn't that reserved for complete opposites, not "yes men"?

Heh.... my life has been on public display. Perhaps not as widely known... but it's out there.

I'm not saying he is wrong. I'm saying that if any of us were subjected to the scrutiny we would likely have people calling us idiots. If any of us could see what others did in secret it would be an ugly scene.

As someone who has tried to sell books I've written, I put myself into a place of potential public scrutiny. I've put myself out there, and still can only manage to get a miniscule amount of attention. Then again, I'm not really one to go to insane lengths to get said attention. About the closest I've gotten was some of the jokes in Random Thoughts, which were worded in such a way to incite outrage, thus getting some free advertising from temper tantrums. Unfortunately, it never got that particular outrage, or attention.

I'm also not opposed to being called an "idiot"... Hell, I did that in one of my YouTube videos. I wear the title of "asshole" like a badge of honour. Words don't hurt my feelings. Those days are long gone.

People who drawn toward Narcissistic personalities often have afflictions of their own, which complement the Narcissism (and they also can have a spot of it within themselves as well), hence the yin/yang.

Read up on NPD, and being in relationships with NPD people, if you're interested.

Oh please, Billy literally had Brian Kuh and Perry Rogers show up at Steve Wiebe's house to inspect his cabinet, and you don't think he wanted that score officially submitted? The guy was doing anything he could to discredit Steve Wiebe and keep himself up at the top.

I wonder if Billy still puts his sauce out on the table every time he eats a meal with a group? He used to do that (brilliantly) every time... for the tax write off. Unfortunately, new tax code doesn't allow such things...

KoK itself wasn't real. It was cut to emphasize a drama and to highlight certain points. You can't judge what was really going on by that film.

I'm well aware that this was a movie and was edited to make it an interesting watch...

But, if this were "just a movie" we would not have had the ensuing 10+ years of drama.

If being "King of Games" and having the title was important to him he would have (post documentary) showed up at an event, put the new highest score on the Donkey Kong (live), and all would be well in the world.

Instead, it seems to me, and I'm not an expert, that the the way this has played out IRL since the release of the film has only helped to confirm that the behavior exhibited in the film may not have been entirely "make-believe".

"The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters," a documentary that is beyond strange...

Couldn't agree more!

:)

I'm not saying you're wrong... but to be fair, if someone comes out of nowhere and claims a score, wouldn't you want to ensure the hardware was valid?

Before you go any further, I DO think it was tasteless to not wait for Steve himself. Let the man get home, relax for a few minutes, grab a beer, THEN inspect the machine. They made it look like it was a matter of national security(which is fine for "movie reality" purposes), not a "video game world record" achievement.

Harassing the wife and mother was wrong no matter how you look at it. Also, I do think it was BS in using "the box" as a factor, and I really don't understand how "a sticky substance" can affect the performance(not the functionality, but the performance) of a PCB. Made up drama, if you ask me. But still, that was "movie reality" crossing over into "real life" reality. Which should never have happened.

Edit: I enjoy watching the movie........ I bought it on iTunes, and frankly, for a "movie", it holds up. But I don't take it as a "documentary".... it's no more a documentary than "Random Thoughts from a Diseased Mind(Not for Dummies)" is a Biography.... and yet the publisher, in their infinite wisdom, put it under that category. <facepalm> It's a comedy book, and I tried to explain that to them on the phone.

No, it's not fair, not in the slightest. It was a precedent that had never been set before

I should also mention that Steve Wiebe submitted his score in accordance with all of the TG requirements and, the one in KoK, was I believe his third submitted taped score. But TG/Billy was trying to find any reason they could to discredit his scores.

Well, BM is entertaining as hell to me and if he wasn't in KoK it would have been a pretty boring movie about some boring dude trying to get a high score while ignoring his home life and family.

The thing to me is, BM pisses a lot of people off for cheating... at a f'ing video game. Who gives a f$*k? I mean, if you're really that impressed with a high score in a video game, let alone so upset that someone lied about it.

That's really what cracks me up, the amount of people who come across like Billy killed their puppy or something. He lied about something no one should really give two shits about anyway.

I guess I like playing video games more than giving a shit about what some person I've never met scores on a game...

I'm clearly an outlier though! Billy is fun and entertaining. I'd have a beer with him too, and eat some hot sauced wings for sure!

The man has made money where others could have/should have. The man has obtained publicity where others could have/should have. My problem is the man cheated out player #2 ... bigtime. Only a real scum bag piece of crap does that to another person.

And evidently, he did it over... and over...

Billy Mitchel might be the nicest guy in the world... but hes a royal douchebag for taking all the "gains" he did off his cheats.

Screw him.

Not sure if you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth or what, but the reality is that there are A TON of people out there who maybe don't amount to a whole lot in life, nor have something in their life to be proud of (family, kids, job) and they turn to video games. You may not care about them, which is all well and good (though I find it amusing you say that on a forum for video games). Some of those same people were denied what Billy had because of what he's done. They were denied fame (however you want to define it), money, travel, recognition, etc.

But hey if you think it's fun and entertaining, then that says something too.

Remember, this is a movie. They portrayed Billy in a negative way to make it more interesting.

10 years ago that was a valid point to make, but in the years since KoK was released, the actions of both have pretty much mirrored their onscreen personas, so all editing could have done was either enhance or subtract from their true personalities.

If you don't want to believe that, then ask yourself this - do you think the movie have been edited to flip Steve's and Billy's "roles", so that Billy was the victim and Steve the villain?
