So I see there is some sort of Billy Mitchell musical that is being produced, which is proclaimed to be the "Redemption of Billy Mitchell". I've seen King of Kong and somewhat followed the fallout from the cheating but it seems like there are a ton of people who just freaking love this guy no matter what. My question is why? What do you find appealing about this guy. His hot sauce? His USA tie? His 90's goatee? No judgements here since I don't know the guy other than his very stand offish persona that seemed to come through from King of Kong. Billy lovers stand up and tell me why you dig him? And do you forgive the Mamegate stuff?

I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he cheated, and lied for years about it... the guy needs to publicly play Pac-Man and donkey Kong and prove he can play those games on a professional level. (If he has, I'd like to see a video)

The guy spends way too much time publicly shaking hands and putting himself generally out there.

There's too much mediocrity in this world where people still praise cheaters because they're "such a nice guy"

All my opinions based on everything I could find pertaining to this dude with too much attention

He enjoys all attention, including the negative kind. This is his appeal, kind of like how many people view Howard Stern.

Some people admire extremely confident people, regardless of how lacking they may be in other areas (like honesty).

You see it quite a bit today...

He played and streamed during free play Florida. I saw him get to 700k.

I could easily ask why kick him? why feel the need to kick someone that has cheated to hold onto "glory days"- who really cares? not me, but since you asked here you go...

well, I am not a billy fan but I will tell you why I do not loathe him but instead respect what he did back in the day and regret what he did too...

-he is human and ego/vanity got the best of him. Do I wish he would have just shook someone's hand (the next big DK player) and said that is awesome you are clearly the record holder and I respect that? Had a beer with them and talked strategy like only the best players can do? Yes I do wish he would have done that, but he did not. That was his choice, his life. My other thoughts below...

-clearly he was one of the best arcade players from the day when no one owned their own machine or MAME existed so I give him that. Even with MAME and a pacman sitting in my living room I cannot do what he can on that machine (pick a handful of classic games and I am sure he would totally toast 99% of anyone on this forum).

-the persona? IDK it never bothered me. I mean if I were really good at something like chess or whatever then Id be very confident in Chess situations / tournaments and would likely hang out at them. I think a lot is holdover from the heyday of arcades in the 80s.

- the MAME thing? I feel more sorry for him that he felt like he needed to do that. He did not need to do that and he only tarnished his reputation by trying to hold onto it. It was enough to be the best at DK back in the day- so I am sorry he felt the need to do that- but I dont hate him for it- I do feel like he should just come clean about it - (its like lance armstrong- he was arguably a great cyclist - better than 99% but for some reason that was not enough so he ruined his reputation too) Now with Billy there is at least the reality that the stuff he did back in the day (before MAME existed) was legit so I acknowledge it.

This really sums up how I feel as well. The whole thing is really just sad, one of the best players couldn't stand losing so he resorted to cheating and acting petty, while souring what should have been a triumphant yet temporary moment for Wiebe to be on top. I think the only other thing that gets to me is he is still in denial and continues speaking in vague "you'll see" promises.

No resemblance whatsoever ... :)

I would wager he's been a liar and cheater since day 1. I haven't dug too terribly deep but I can't find any information corroborating his claimed 25m score at Centipede, which got him to TG sphere in the first place.

I'm hoping 2019 will bring less threads that have already been done before like this.

How do you get an exact score like that on Centipede? Considering that every numerical placement in the score will be affected. Mushrooms count for 1 point, for example.

You send a letter to 1981 Walter Day and tell him that was your score, and everyone is gullible enough to believe it, I guess.

I just always thought that was interesting. That photo was from the Life magazine shoot and I've never found a documented score coming close to that. I've read it takes 39 hours or something to even hit 10+ million, so there's a lot not adding up. No one ever seems to address this score ever, though.

If you're Billy, you just do it.

Kinda like Chuck Norris.

Billy is amazing at games. He's a nice person in real life. Like, really nice.

But yeah, apparently he cheated. So, that sucks. A ding in his armor, for sure. But I'd go have a beer with him any time.

Also... BEST MULLET EVER

If the screen was cleared of mushrooms, didn't the Centipede "make" more? I vaguely remember we were messing around on the game, and tried to NOT shoot the Centipede, but clear the screen of mushrooms.

We did stupid shit like that... We'd take a handful of "red" tokens, and fuck around when the place was slow.

Anyway... couldn't he have stayed on round 1 and keep shooting mushrooms?

People who give a shit about any of the Billy Mitchell melodrama are the same people who think pro wrestling is real.
