I agree with the preservation aspect behind this, and I've been on both sides of the debate having parted out my share of games over the years. At the end of the day, we are all just caretakers of these machines and they will someday pass on to our children or other collectors.
With that basic tenet in mind, I've always done my restorations towards preservation instead of whats easy or looks neat. That is really the bigger aspect of preservation, deterring part outs is just a facet.
The other side of the coin or token in this context is that part outs do provide a vital flow of components to restore or de-convert games so they're a necessary evil. I can think of numerous personal examples where I've bought parts to replace damaged, converted, or missing items to restore original titles, directly from games being parted out.
