I need to pick up an eprom programmer asap. I read the threads about people recommending The pocket programmer 3.. supports 2532, 2716, etc.

Also couple people saying the TOP line is okay and can do 2716 and 2532 with an adapter. I am looking at the TOP 3100. It supports a lot more modern chips as well including PIC/AVR microcontrollers.

Anyone have any experience with these brand of programmers? Any other ones I should consider less then $250? I dont want to deal with a DOS programmer. I need windows 7 support. I do a bit of PIC dev so I like they
both support some PIC chips but the top 3100 supports the 17x and 18x PICs.

The PP3 runs $269. I can get the top 3100 for $210.

Thoughts?
Any quirks with either? Can the TOP really burn older stuff?

The GQ-4X has worked well for me as well as others here:

I read a lot of negative comments about it in the archives. Probably 50/50 pos/neg. Do they have support for 2532? It seems to support most everything else.

I have burned 2532 chips. You just have to make sure you choose the right device so you don't destroy the chip. And like I said, you'll need a separate power supply for some chips, the software will tell you. I made a 24 volt adapter that works well.

Hmm can you give me some details on getting 2532's to burn and making the adapter.. perhaps in a PM? The GQ4x is a LOT cheaper then the pocket programmer.

I believe I just chose the TMS2532 device (as I had a TI chip) in the software, ran a blank check to make sure the chip was blank, loaded the ROM, and then selected "Write".

For the adapter, I just took a regular wall-wart adapter I had lying around and put a plug on it that fit the programmer.

I was a total newb when I got my programmer, but I have used it to successfully burn roms for Tron, Discs of Tron, Satan's Hollow, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, and Asteroids. It's pretty easy to learn, but I'd recommend picking up a few extra chips of whatever you are burning.

Pm elutz on the pp3. He has had some issues. I believe there is another member who.has one that is having the same problems. Let's just say I'm glad I found a pp2 on eBay long ago. Seeing what he has gone through I would have long ago ran a pp3 over with my truck.
