Hi guys,

I have a strange issue that I've always lived with, but would like to fix. The game is working perfectly, and the picture/sounds are perfect, with the exception of the red flashing death screen. The red color and flashing is fine, but for some reason, there are raster lines going through the picture. The monitor is also fully serviced and looks great otherwise…just that event.

Any ideas what might fix that? I thought about recapping the board set. Anybody know of a chip on the video/audio board that would be responsible for that?

Here's a video:

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Jason

That's just retrace during vsync... Just turn the red gun down a bit.

Exidy doesn't turn off r/g/b during blanking like most other mfgs did.
The enables on the 151s are tied low, so when they write color 0 (background) to anything other than black, it gets displayed all the time, including during sync.

Thanks, Mark. I appreciate the response. I'll give this a shot and let you know the results. This was a head scratcher, and I was leaning towards a chip, cap, etc. on the video board since everything else looked good.

The funny thing is that I swore up and down that I remembered seeing this in the arcade back in the 80s and thinking it was normal, but maybe it was the same thing as you mentioned, and the monitor was misadjusted for red.

Cheers,
Jason

Well, I tried turning not only red, but all of the pots, and that monitor doesn't really color adjust that much, so unfortunately, it didn't change. Maybe it's a compatibility issue with that game? The picture, sharpness, and colors all look great otherwise. It's just the dying part flashing in the video. Not a big deal. Since it was only with the death sequence, that's what made me think it could be a chip in the game/video section, but it sounds like that wouldn't be the case.

Thanks again,
Jason

For some reason exidy ran CBLB to the top board but doesn't seem to actually use it.

Try lifting pin 10 on 10B and running CBLB to that -- then the background will turn off during blanking and your retrace may go away.

Having only the intended visible screen area go red instead of the entire screen looks less cool though.

I appreciate the info. Could you tell me what CBLB is?

Thanks,
Jason
