Exidy High Score Save Kit - Does it exist?

I do not believe anyone has or does. If they do they might as well go the extra step and make an exidy multi kit that plays hard hat, venture, pepper II, probably teeter torture and maybe mouse trap. The first four listed run off the exact same hardware so I know they would be possible in a multi kit. Mouse trap is a slightly different board set so I'm not 100% sure it would work.

It would have to be a labor of love, as the Exidy titles are all fairly rare. I couldn't imagine a multi-kit selling all that well.

You are correct sir.

Exidy titles tend to be ROM intensive, IIRC the Exidy 440 project had around 400 ROMs. There is no way to amortize that development and layout work over such a small pool of ownership.

How many do you think would need to be sold for it to be worthwhile?

I'd buy one in a heartbeat :) .

But I agree that Exidy games are not that popular...they should be, though, as they really are fun games overall ;) .

For now I guess I have to settle for owning the boardsets and swapping when suits my fancy...

There are at least the freeplay ROMs that were put out by another KLOVr (DogP) awhile back...I burned them and put them on all of my boardsets (Venture, Mouse Trap, and PII), and they worked great:

Pepper II allows you to set the dip switches for free play, no?

I will see if it has freeplay in mame.

It isn't that they are unpopular, they are quite popular and quite a few collectors focus on them (notice how much many of them sell for).

It is that there just isn't all that many of them out there, they have a very high pull rate among collectors and most of them are already in collector's hands and look how few of them are registered on vaps. Sure I know vaps isn't every machine in the world, but it is a great survey on what titles are most common among collectors and there aren't even 100 registered copies combined of the games that run on the Pepper II type hardware.

Complicating the issue is that many of the people that DO have them tend to have multiple Exidy titles.

There may be other revisions but the version in mame doesn't have a freeplay dip.

Per the 2nd Edition manual:

"Freeplay: For those wishing to demostrate PEPPER II, a freeplay mode may be achieved by turning switches 2 through 8 ON"

Also, a lot of people seem to complain about the music in the game. In the 2nd edition manual, they also point out a "Stripped Music" feature:

"STRIPPED MUSIC: for those locations desiring limited audio effects, this options plays limited selections of game music and effects. Turn switch 2 OFF, and switches 3 through 8 ON"

I would think that Exidy games being mostly in the possession of collectors would actually bode well for the amount of kits that you could sell.

Collectors are surely more likely to modify their games than the casual owner.

Best way would be to do a presale sign-up list of course to get a roundabout idea.

the Exidy titles like pepper II only have 7-9 eproms per game I believe. I also believe each game has a single prom with game specific info. Should be far easier than a 440 board.

I would LOVE to see a multikit even though I have all of the individual game boards. If nothing else, it would help to preserve the game as the boardsets can be a bit flaky, particularly if they aren't used that much.

Prices for the Exidy boards have sure skyrocketed of late, too...I remember when I picked up the various boardsets I have (early 2000s), they were going for as little as $10-$40 (at most) on eBay. I distinctly remember getting an MT board for about $10, and a Venture board for about $30. PII boards were a little more...but never more than about $40 maybe.

Certainly not true anymore...

But I'd gladly settle for a high score save kit ;) ...
