Started 10/1 - if you end an item of yours that has bids on it, even after choosing the "cancel all active bids and end auction" option, you ***still get charged the final value fee!***

BEWARE THE 'BAY!

I agree. Nothing more frustrating then to have an auction you are bidding on pulled from under you because someone offered them something off of ebay

sounds like a good thing to me. Sellers should be penalized for doing that.

Why? It's THEIR stuff and are under NO obligation to sell it to you until you win and pay.

To "penalize" someone for doing as they wish with their belongings, not to mention the mindset of someone who is okay with that, is beyond scary.

Are they gonna let the seller end the auction within 12 hours..? Cuz you cant, or couldnt end the auction once it hits 12 hours til end of auction...!

Finally they are doing something about this.

Sellers can 'do as they wish' on their own website.

If they are turning to ebay to advertise their goods with no intention of selling through the site, they should pay up.

Anything else is free advertising.

We're talking about Ebay right? Not some dude at a yard sale?

That is the only defense to this - eBay can set their rules as they see fit. My point is, this rule, like many, many others they have instituted in the last several years, sucks badly. No negatives for bidders, anyone?

As far as "free advertising" - the way around that is to charge for listings, like they used to. That way they get their fees regardless of if there is a sale or not. Charging for a sale on their site when there was not one made is shifty and that's what they are doing.

If they are charging you a fee regardless of whether your item sells or not...isn't that basically a listing fee?

And they aren't saying you CAN'T end an auction or sell your item outside of the auction right? They aren't telling you what you can and cannot do. They are just making sure they get paid if you advertise on their site regardless of what you ultimately decide to do.

Seems fair to me.

No. They don't charge you if the auction runs its course and has no winner.

So, they are charging you the cost of a sale if you've not sold anything simply for ending your listing. But just like so many other things having to do with eBay in recent years, it's shifty at best.

So, just to be clear, you are okay with eBay telling you what you can and can't do with YOUR property?

If you choose to list YOUR property under Ebay's policies than you should be held accountable to thier policies. As was mentioned above Ebay is not supposed to be used as a free advertising site and too many "sellers" have been doing just this and getting away with it for too long.

It's the sellers that are shady. I hate sellers ending auctions early because they got what they needed out of eBay (free advertising) and want to complete the auction outside of the system.

If they end an auction early they should pay for the free advertising service they consumed.

Ageed - one can't argue that you shouldn't follow their rules if you use their service but saying a particular rule sucks is another thing entirely.

What if they didn't sell the item off eBay?

You are blaming the victim in this instance. Ebay loses an insane amount of money every year from people using them for free advertising. They have decided to alter their policies in order to reclaim some of that money in the short term and stop the abuse in the long term.

There is one member here who used to post regularly bragging about gaming Ebay's system. I find him to be one of the most untrustworthy individuals on these forums because of it. I have never done any business with him and I will never do any business with him because if he is willing to screw over Ebay, a business that he intends to continue to use in the future, why should I believe that he is not willing to screw over me, a guy he will likely never deal with again?
