So I recapped my K4900 chassis, and was setting to put it all in the cab. After powering it up, I get no picture. My first thought is to measure the B+ voltage, so I grab my handy meter, the one I've been meaning to replace forever. You know, a better one with some alligator clips, the perfect type for clipping onto that big resistor. Well silly me, since I'm fumbling trying to hold the two leads in place, I promptly short the resistor and kill my HOT. Worse still, as I pull the chassis back out, I didn't have picture because I didn't connect the yoke. FML. Time for a new HOT and a meter that is hands free.

There is no need to replace your meter, I have never seen a multimeter which comes with leads with alligator clips on them. Leads with clips are available seperately, you can also get a slip-on part which converts a standard probe into one with a clip. I have never used these so I have no idea if they are any good or not.

While I have a nice set of leads on my meter that has several different attachments - including alligator clips - I rarely ever pull them out and attach them. I have several alligator jumpers around for various purposes, and just use them. One on the chassis ground and one on my test point - connected to my red and black leads. Works just fine...

+1 for jumpers. The extra length you get from the jumpers is nice for positioning the meter just where you need it. Also, a lot of times I'll just clip the ground and then use the probe to move around quickly.
