Have you ever played a game when you were a kid, hated it, then bought it years later to find out it was really fun? It happened to me with Gravitar. When I was a teenager the game was just too flippin hard and took way too many of my precious quarters...

I bought one a few years ago (package deal with Space Duel) and now can't stop playing it... let's hear about the games that you hated/love!

At the risk of putting my neck out, Donkey Kong.

I know, I know, it's a classic, blah blah blah. I didn't much like the art / gameplay style which we now, many years and many titles later, all recognize as the Nintendo style. Back in those days I wanted laser guns and monsters, not jumping and cutesy characters (Pacman being the exception to that).
But today I now recognize Donkey Kong for it's cornerstone status and "King of Kong" wizard-like game play complexity.

I don't think I would say I "love" it but I have reversed my initial dislike of the game. Does that count?

Defender. Quarter sucker as a kid. However, when I owned it myself, it's amazingly fun. Plus, years of playing it on Mame just doesn't do it justice. You have to have the bass sound and custom control panel or its not the same.

Sadly, someone advertised on Craigslist to trade their fully working Tempest AND DigDug for a Defender. 2 for 1? I couldn't say no, plus it was my first vector. I'll get it again someday. Until then I'll lament a little and play my Robotron instead.

Pinball. I bet I didn't spend $2.75 total on pinball BITD. Now I have one in the basement and will drop in a few quarters when I see a pin out on route, just to play different titles.

Missile Command. I went to a closing arcade in the mid 90s in Chula Juana... er, Vista and was going to leave empty handed but ended up dropping $40 on a "non-working" Missile Command cabaret. Got it home, plugged the harness in to the board and the love affair began...

XXI21 should be along shortly, he loves this story...

Can't say that I have... Most of my epiphanies have been "Used to love it, bought one, got bored of it..."

I completely agree with both Gravitar and Qbert--they are the 2 most played games in our house. I'm seriously hooked on Grav and finally completed all planets in the first universe--sheesh, that game always outpaces you and keeps you coming back for more. I play regularly and still have never broken 60K.
