This was an interesting post Rj had made a while back. I was wondering how many others have tried to trouble shoot boards with an Esr meter?

I bought mine in kit form from Anatek.

One good thing about ESR testers is that since they are really little more than a high frequency milli-ohmmeter they work VERY well in tracking down shorts on a board. As you get closer to the shorted component the resistance will drop by hundredths of an ohm. When you find the lowest readings overall then that's the area you should start pulling components from.

Does anything else hold a charge on the boards besides the caps?

Another thing i am curious about is how to discharge caps the correct way.

Will the http://www.anatekcorp.com/blueesr.htm blue esr meter discharge them autotragically?

Whats the best policy on this?

Thanks
