Can anybody reccomend a good, relatively inexpensive programmer for basic copying, erasing and/or writing? I see a bunch of cheap TOP series programmers on eBay but I am unsure about their quality.

I use one of the cheap Willem. It's a bitch to work with sometimes, but it hasn't fully failed me yet for what I've needed it to do. (2764, 2732, 2532).

If you can afford better, I'd highly recommend getting something better. The Willems are pretty much at the bottom of the list... but they work in a pinch.

Sadly, when I program some chips... I actually have to blow on the board to keep the 7805 from over heating and shutting off VCC. But... them's the breaks when you go cheap. :dead1:

I originally had a Willem burner and decided to upgrade do to the fact that 2532s where a real b*tch to program with it. I got a BP Microsystems EP-1140 burner off eBay for $37 + shipping and haven't looked back. It is like night and day; it burns fast and is so much simpler to use!

My pocket programmer USB worked great up until about a month ago when I started having problems burning 2732. Now it simply wont burn 2732 or 2532 at all. This is on both my desktop and laptop which it previously work great on both machines.
Loaded up the software on the work computer last night and it worked like a champ so obviously its a software issue. I have completely removed and reinstalled the software several times, updated to the newer version, reflashed the burners bios etc etc etc.
Getting it to work on a different computer was definitly good progress now that I know for sure its not a hardware problem. I plan on giving them a call and keeping them on the phone until I get this damn thing fixed finally.
Before these issues I would have and have reccomended the pocket programmer but not now. It is great when it was working correctly. The interface is simple to use and its super fast. On the other hand its not cheap but it does handle just about any chip you would need for an arcade machine. If I get it working perfect again I plan on getting the prom adapter for it.
From everything I have read, the willems are for occasional users and can be a pain to work with. My deciding factors were ease of use and being able to do all the parts I needed without adapters.

The Data I/O Unisite can usually be had on Ebay for about $50 - $100 if you are patient. Just make sure it has the Site 48, not Site 40 adapter for maximum flexibility. They are monsters but well work it.
