I have decided to buy my first programmer. What is a good entry level programmer. I see many varieties on ebay with a wide variety of prices. My question to those of you who use one frequently: what is a good model, what is an expected price, which ones to steer clear of?

Is there a reference point for the 82S129 and other proms? Meaning, is the pinout simliar to another part? I have this ancient Digiwave thing thats supposedly burns proms but I haven't messed with it yet.

Yea, the older proms from the same family are so very close. Basically it's 1, 4 or 8 bits and give or take a few address lines. The programming info is on the 82s129 datasheet and you just need a higher voltage to blow the internal fuses at the latched address.

The real issue is getting a reliable supply of older proms at a reasonable price. Ebay is hit and miss with vendors selling these one time programmable devices which have been previously programmed. Useless crap.
