I have seen some threads on this forum a couple of times but wanted to ask the question a little different, I want to spend between $100-$260. I have seen that USB for power only is not the best and that the ebay programmers where not recommended. I like the software and specs for the BATRONIX - BX40 BAGERO (http://www.newark.com/batronix/bx40...870?in_merch=PopularProducts&in_merch=Popular Products&MER=PPSO_N_C_EverywhereElse_None) but does not seem to have the external power supply.

Are there any other recommendations for this price range and that can read, write, erase, and compair in one unit with the software quality that the batronix has?

Thanks again for all your recomendations.

For the price, this has been getting some good reviews, just buy the eraser to go with it,,only a few bucks extra.

I just went to ratshack and bought an external power supply to go with it for 10 bucks. It's not always needed though.

The GQ-4X seems to be the most-recommended programmer on this forum. I also use an external power supply with mine, but I don't know if it's necessary. I have a drawer full of old wall-wart style AC adapters so I happened to have one that fit, but you can buy them cheap off eBay. I've had no problems programming any chips so far, including 2532's. Not sure if the Batronix supports those. Here's a link to the programmer+eraser bundle: http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4546

I some folks that indicate that GQ-4X works well and some that say there junk. One quest is the software. I have not seen anything on what features the software has or what it looks like? anyone have a link to that information?

You can download and install the software without the programmer: http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/mcumall_download.asp

Some screenshots and features are listed in the manual, which is 2nd in the list linked above.

I like the software for the GQ-4X. Simple, intuitive and windows-native, unlike the DOS text-mode software for some other programmers.

One thing you haven't said was what OS your computer is running. That will make a HUGE difference in what programmer you can and cannot use. The driver models changed for Vista and Windows 7 which means many older programmers simply will not work. Hell, many of the newer ones won't in those operating systems either!

Also, does your computer have a parallel port or only USB? If you don't have a parallel port then you MUST buy a USB port programmer or you must go find a PCI parallel port card to install. The old programmers look for a real parallel port and interact with the hardware. They don't generally work with a USB to Parallel adapter.

Good thought. I have access to windows 7 and vista. the both have usb. I beleive there is a parallel port on the desktop, not sure on the laptop. Both are at least quad processors wirth 6 gig memory and plenty of disk space.

The comments you read about requiring an external power supply are aimed primarily at the Willem-based programmers (the cheap Chinese ebay junk). The Batronix Bagero is a well designed piece of hardware. It is capable of generating the voltages it needs without any external help (there's a reason it has a ~$300 price tag).

Thanks matt. My struggle is that I don't plan on useing this that much but want one for when I need it. I have a zaxxon that needs the roms veryfyed and more than likly at least one repaired. I am leaning to go with the Batronix Bagero becuase I don't beleive in upgrading, but just getting the right tool the first time. But at 3X the price, I have to at least ask.

My bigger question really is what else is out there. it seems that on the cheep end most folks are useing the GQ-4X. Did not know if there was something else in my price range beside the GQ-4X and the Batronix and why folks would go with those as aposed to these two.
