Need some recommendations on a decent eprom burner. Anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to be able to burn eproms in most older games and don't want to spend a fortune...maybe a couple hundred dollars tops.

Thanks,
Tracy

I've had good luck with the GQ-4X from here:

From what I've heard, you will probably be happier if you use an external power supply (wall wart) with this. USB may not give enough power in some cases. I've always used an external supply and haven't had a problem. Adapters are also readily available for it to burn a wider variety of roms.

I use a Wellon VP280, if it caught fire I would buy another one without hesitation.

There have already been several threads discussing this. You may want to do a search and review them too.

I have also been using this one for a number of years and it has a wide support (I have mostly used it in the past for reprogramming automotive eproms).

External power supply is only needed for certain chips (the ones that require a higher burn voltage) - the software will actually tell you if it needs external power when you select the chip type. But as mentioned these can be picked up for cheap from most places (IIRC it is a 9v supply).

Thanks for pointing that out! I almost always search before asking on questions like this but did not this time and I do not know for the life of me why not!

Either way, there was a thread on this just the other day...live and learn I guess!

I second the GQ-4X

i just got one of these, and don't know what to expect. I installed the 2.0 driver and software v6.13. It seems to just hang - one of 10 'blank check' commands completed in about a second, the rest just give a progress bar with no progress.

When i attempt to write to a TMS2732A, it immediately jumps to 7% and then seems to hang.

can someone tell me what durations i should expect these operations to take?

i couple of seconds

i couple of seconds

this time, with the 9V adapter, it immediately said 4% and is stuck there for the last 3-5 minutes, with the red VCC light on. I assume if i disconnect it the contents of the chip will not be what i want.

Mine is messed up too, I hope it's software but when you plug it in and start the program, it locks up. Used to work fine, I tried to sign up for their support forum, but they won't send me the confirmation email, lol. Grrrrr.

I got the registration email instantly, just a few mins ago.

Had a second of inspiration today 'maybe it is a problem with my 64bit Win7 computer'... tonite I installed onto a laptop with 32bit XP-SP3. Everything worked properly and my chip verifies. Now to get the machine working so i can test it out.
