What is the current method of choice for backing up EPROMs without messing up a board? I have an as of yet publically undumped board with a TMS JL 27c020-12 EPROM and a M27C256B-12F1 EPROM and I'm a bit terrified since from what I understand EPROMs last 10-20 years and this one is 19 years old. It also goes to a redemption game so it's not like anyone else is going to copy it into MAME or anything... I have sources for backup chips themselves but I'd hate for the programming to be lost and for these to all become unplayable one day.

The much older 2732 eproms in my DigDug are 30 years old, and are fine.

Pull them from the board one by one and use a programmer to read them then save the images.

e-mail them to yourself, then as long as the e-mail account is active they will be on the 'net and you can get the images from any computer.

Sorry, maybe I asked that wrong... I know I need to use a programmer and back them up online, I'm trying to find a programmer that will be compatible with these chips. I read that some of the M27 models are a beast to read and I'm not sure where to even start... I've never tried dealing with EPROMS before so I don't really know what to look for. The 30 years is really encouraging though...

Both of those EPROMs are easy to read. Just about any programmer will do. If you're not comfortable dumping the ROMs then just send the board to someone who is. Plenty of people on here are capable and will gladly help you out.
