Hi, I am a newbie and by the end of this post you will definitely know that. I was trying to touch up the right side of my episode 1 machine, the side with qui gon jinn. All said and done I completely ruined the decal and have some bare wood showing. At this point I was thinking about stripping the whole side to wood and replacing the artwork with a silkscreened version. I would appreciate any thoughts on this, my other option is potentially buying an original decal set. Is there a preference? Do most pinheads leave the cabinet alone?

Thanks in advance

How do you propose to silkscreen it??

You would have to decal it....

I personally don't worry about the cabinet that much, but some people do crazy restorations and go all out...everyone is different...

Episode 1 Decals

Does anyone know if the decals or the silkscreen would be easier to put on. Unfortunately I am looking at taking the right side cabinet down to bare wood and starting over. The decals dont include the black border like the silkscreen. I am guessing I would apply the decal and paint around it. The original one I am removing is almost like a skin.

Silk screening usually refer to a process...and if it is what you are refering to, it is more work than applying decals. The link posted above is for NOS decals (factory originals) - not sure why they would be different, unless there was a change made for a 2nd printing. If you are peeling it up, it's a decal.

The process invloves laying the screen on the object to be printed, add some ink and then using a squeegie spread/pres the ink through the screen to transfer it to the object. Remove srceen, allow to dry and then proceed to the next screen for the next color and repeat as many time as there are colors.

You would be doing a decal..period...you do not have an option.

Look around, decals are out there in perfect shape. There's also a few sites out there that detail how to install them too :)

There's more to it then just slappng the decal on, if you want to do it properly...

Good luck...

Here are some examples from RGP, but there is alot of other info out there if you look...

Yeah, the only real option is the conversion kit decals that I linked to above. The decals were created through a silkscreen process. The original SWE1 graphics may have been directly screened onto the cabinets.... Or they may have been just a larger version of the conversion kit decals (with all the black border around them). Someone may have reprinted the larger version, but I would go with the NOS kit decals instead.
