This is my first foray into pins. I just picked up an Embryon and it won't coin up. Playfield and back lights work and all fuses meter out ok. Where do I go from here, please. Thanks.

Does anybody know the values for the bridge rectifiers on the power supply? I can't match the numbers but the board is a Bally as2518 54 with an additional number of p2948 413. Thanks.

Are your displays working or dead?

Edward

No displays as it just blows the fuse. I ordered the 35 amp/400 volt bridge rectifier from Bob Roberts today. I'll give that $3 fix a try first!

I'm confused....the first post stated all fuses metered good. Which fuse is blowing?

I'm trying to figure out if the machine is even booting up....just because playfield/backglass lights come on doesn't mean the machine had fully booted up. Have you checked voltage test points?

The display voltage is rectified by 4 diodes rather than a rectification bridge. Fortunately for you the diodes are a lot cheaper.

I bought a non-working Stern Dracula once with one of those diodes shorted. Gotta love a $.10 fix!

The fuses initially metered out ok until I found the one under the left flipper. It was blown. I replaced it and the bridge rectifier but the flipper fuse still blows.

I was getting all sorts of incorrect voltages on the rectifier board. I ordered a replacement from Marco. Stay tuned...

That's strange. Were you checking the rectifier board with only the AC attached (connector J2)?

F4 is the solenoid fuse so it's likely related to the flipper fuse problem. You could have a shorted flipper coil but the flipper switch would have to be closed to cause the fuse to blow. Unless the flipper switch is welded closed or something.

I unplugged all but the power in from the transformer. I did not want to chance blowing something else.

Did you check all the coils to see if any showed signs of burning? Look for the wrapper browning or scorching. Also, don't forget the knocker. I don't know why....but I'm always finding burnt knocker coils in pinball machines.

As for the flipper coils...make sure someone didn't wire one/both up wrong...believe me...it happens.

Here's where I stand now: I have a new rectifier board in there. I found a burned kicker coil but as I didn't have a replacement, I removed it and insulated the wires. Now, I can power up without blowing any fuses but I still have no coin-up or displays. I do have general illumination and playfield lights. The sound board also talks to me when I hit that test button. The test button on the main board however, does nothing. Where from here fellas/gals? Thanks.

On power-up, is the MPU LED flashing 7 times? If not...how many times is it flashing?

Edward

There is a short flash at the initial power from the switch. Then, there are two "real" flashes.

Alright, Now we're getting somewhere. Your machine hasn't booted up. All you're seeing is the general illumination. Hell, you can remove every board in the backbox....and those lights will still light. You need that initial "flicker" followed by seven "real" flashes. No third flash....bad 5101 (U8), or it's socket. Very common, since it sets right beside the battery. How's the battery corrosion?

More information than you ever wanted to know about Bally MPU's :)
