EM Tech: Midway Haunted House

I agree with gorfchampion that's one sweet restoration...

This is tough Ive restored several different types of games. I don't own an HH.

I have a question does this cause the motor to run continuously and thus the game never resets? Do you blow fuses when this occurs?

A few more questions how far did you go in your restoration? Did you tear down your score motor, clean all the switches? How about switches in general. Did you resolder wires? Did you check to make sure your switch stacks were tightened and tha none of the blades behind the contact switch are touching? Here's the reason I ask the more that you touch the more chances of alignment issues.

Its best to have a good set of drawings and sometimes the manual as start up sequences are really helpful. Remember it's not just the S relay that's involved in the score starting or stopping. DMM your other relays associated with the start sequence and make sure you don't have a burned up coil.

First of all thanks a lot!

Second the motor locks up humming loudly but when I isolate (put a piece of paper between one of the contacts) one side of the make or break switch for the score motor it works fine. Scores reset and the beat this score mech works and lights a score. I did tear down the score motors cleaned it all and put it back together. I was extra careful and it was put together properly. I made sure all the switch stakes are tight and I cleaned the switches. All coils work.

Still perplexing me!
Thanks again!

OK now I can give you some advice...the contact on the score motor your blocking. That contact is tied to a relay. This is when it's important to have a diagram for the game. You have to follow it back to that relay because a switch in that relay stack is closed when it should be open or vise versa.

Have to love it one contact and it creates total havoc...

Good luck...

got to the root of the problem

So I had an friend come over (Kris from Firebird Pinball) and he diagnosed the problem. It was in the motor. One side works great the other side struggles to turn. Unless someone has an extra Multi Product 1899 motor I am going to take a go at fixing it myself. There is a motor rebuilding place and I am going to try to get some advice after work. If anyone has some advice I would love to hear it!

Thanks!
Chris

Motor fixed!

So I have repaired the motor, it was a that bushing and while I could get it fixed from Pinball Resource, (they are the official Multi Product repair place). (Nothing against PBR, I buy stuff from the all the time, they wanted $100 plus parts to fix it. I am cheap and was able to get a bronze bushing from an awesome hardware store near us (McFadden Dale) and using some thin copper as a shim I replaced it.

Well now I have a few other issues that are perplexing me!
No scoring. I get the 20 shots, targets get hit (except the witch which is another problem) but no scoring.
Cannot knock down the witch and the vertical motor stays on when game over.
10 cent relay does not work.

I have found a place to rebuild the 8 track and they are going to remaster it and be able to make copies of it. So if your in need of it, I will post the name of them as soon as they finish it.

Hope someone can give me a slight push in the right direction for these...

And sorry about (2) posts for this, somehow they are splitting into different topics.

Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,
I think the problem with the witch staying up and the vertical motor running could be a fault on the motor control board. The motor controls board do fail and have repaired one for a Wild Kingdom and Sea Rescue.

Thanks Derek, that was it! A couple of resistors were blown and they took out the MJE520. All is better with that now. The problem now is the scoring. Only get 100 for each target, the witch is suppose to be worth 300 and the others 200. Any hints would be appreciated here also. Hopefully the tapes will be back this week and it will be complete! Thanks again! Chris

I realize this, I really hope Mark recovers.

I did find a company that rebuilds 8 tracks, they are remastering the audio tracks and making new tapes for me.

Thanks for all your help Hans!

scoring issues

So I am still having scoring issues. The targets still only score 100 points for the monster and cats, only 200 for the witch. Could someone do me a solid and give me and idea where to look to solve this issue? I know it is somewhere in the circuit below but I can't figure it out!

Thanks in advance!
Chris

I've never found any of those titles before but was lucky enough to find my HH in the trash. Nice back glass and almost worked but was missing the 8-track player and gun.

Thats sure a beautiful restoration! If mine can look anywhere near that good when done, I will be in heaven! Haven't checked my tape if it works yet, would be interested in getting one though.
I haven't looked much at mine yet, hope to soon though.
Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Hi Chris,
I think you are definitely in the right area. Here are a couple of things you might like to check

Are the scores resetting to 0 alright?
I would watch the witch hit, left cat, right cat hit relay and see if these activate when the target is hit.
The control unit disc which connects to these, controls how long the score reels start and stop so probably something wrong in this area.
Could be dirty contacts on the wipers arms or pcb.
Could be the disc has moved out of alignment on its shaft and is not lined up correctly.
Score motor clutch slipping?
