I'm hoping someone can give me some advice regarding this problem that developed on my Gottlieb Atlantis.

Scenario:
My game was feeding an extra ball after ball 5.

The game was over, but the ball was fed into the shooter lane and it had to be plunged in order to return it to the outhole.

I did some research and found out that this problem is typically corrected by cleaning and aligning the ball count relay.

So I examine the ball count relay and find that it is misaligned.
I also notice that the rivets are dull. So I sand and clean the rivets.
I clean and sand the snow shoe connectors. I correct the alignment.

The extra ball issue is resolved and the game plays correctly.
After 2-3 games, I try to restart a new game and the AS Relays starts continuously spinning.
I do some more research and find that the AS is very finicky. So I disconnect the relay and I am able to start a game without a problem.

However, the very next game, I attempt to start a game, and the scoring motor starts to run continuously. I turn off the game and reconnect the AS Relay.
Now the scoring motor will stop, but the AS Relay will not.
I power off the game, disconnect the AS Relay and the scoring motor starts spinning the moment I turn on the game.

Synopsis of my actions:

Other than cleaning the ball unit, I haven't cleaned or corrected any switch and/or relay.

Any advice would be very helpful. I have a schematic, but as far as I can tell, the AS Relay only controls the 00-09 match unit.
Thanks in advance for any help.

If the score motor keeps running, it could be an intermittent contact on the playfield that's stuck down. This would be consistent with it working then after a few plays, the score motor running continuously.

I thought so too, but the scoring motor will only spin continuously in the following scenario.

When the game is powered down while the AS Relay is spinning continously and I disconnect the jones plugs for the AS Relay.

When I turn the game back on, the motor spins. When I plug back in the jones plugs for the AS Relay, the scoring motor will work as expected, but the AS Relay is goofy.

When I manually fix the AS Relay and help the game complete the start up sequence, I am able to power down and disconnect the jones plugs for the AS Relay without any weird continuous action from the motor on the next power up.

So, I can play the game, I just was hoping to figure out this strange issue with the AS Relay.

You hit the nail right on the head. It turns out the A Relay had a switch that was not quite close enough to make solid contact.

I adjusted and cleaned the switch and all is well now.

Thanks for the help!

Gotta love EMs for that. Don't need no damn 300$ circuit boards or roms or cpus from hong kong.....

/waiting on parts for every damn machine I own.

At least LOTR plays great in the meantime.

Now that it`s fixed put it on 3 balls like it should be...

Don't know about your area, but all replay Wedgeheads in my area are set to 5 ball play.

Is there different scoring on 3 ball play for Atlantis as opposed to 5 ball play?

I did change my Capt. Card to start with 3 balls since 5 ball made the games last too long.

So far, my 5 ball games on Atlantis are about 3 minutes or so.

Old School Rule: 3" flippers=3 balls. 2" flippers=5 balls. On most ems. There are a few exceptions...Back when ems were on the street that`s how most ops had them set up.
