Fun one - the Stern Elvis game I have been repairing for a customer is starting to lose the DMD display.

I tried to re-flow the DMD power board (upper left board on the head), and did find Q5 "loose" in the fit. I hit all the rectifiers, and any connection that looked the least bit questionable, refreshing with fresh solder.

I'm looking for suggestions as to what the best course of action is to repair this one. I can see the Data East TFTC won't be far behind - it's already showing similar symptoms.

Measure voltages to the DMD at the big connector. If they are right. Time for a new DMD.

LTG : )

Any suggestions on where I can get the voltages, short of driving through the schematics?

Looks like the display is simply going out. I always just swap one real quick before doing any real work. LEts you know right away if its the display or the board.

Yep, that's what the guys at Stern said. I'll have to find a good source - I think PBR has them for $140. Marco wants $199. WTH? With Marco's buying power, you'd think they'd be lower.

I did ring out the cables, but unfortunately, they were good.

The strange thing is it goes from nothing to a little something as the tube warms up. I'm going to replace the tube - the only question now is LED or back to the HV and Plasma.

I'm leaning towards the LED at this point. I'll see what my customer wants, but LED = No HV, no life limit, $200, Plasma = 5 to 6 year service life, still have to mess with HV, around $140.

I just replaced one on a World Poker Tour. Almost $200 from my distributor. I priced the stern led out and and it was going to be over $600.

Well, I can go to Marco Specialty and get their version for $200, or go to Pinballlife.com, and get their version for $157.50.

Anyone use either product and have any opinions, good or bad?

It's too bad The Addams Family DMD isn't compatible. I just installed a Color DMD and my old DMD is sitting in the closet. I would have let you have it for free.

I found the DMD at Pinball Life for $184.06 with shipping.

Installed it today, and viola! We're back in Elvis DMD space again!

Woo hoo!

zenomorp rocks

zenomorp gave me his old dmd and I finally got a chance to install it in my Monster Bash last night. It sure is nice to actually know what your score is. Thanks zenomorp that was the best Christmas present ever.
