Can you convert an elevator action p b to alpine ski with just a rom swap, or is there more to it?

I don't have the answer to your question, but I have the solution: Don't Do It!! Elevator Action is awesome! One of my former games I miss the most.

Not for me, a buddy of mine has a an EA board he wants to convert to alpine ski, my EA is staying put, lol!

Also following since I think if I remember, picked up 1 good and 1 bad pcb. Or maybe it was 2 jungle kings or something, probably was drunk when I bought it thinking i needed one. I think the qix/zk is different enough of a platform pcb that it wouldn't work with those generation pcbs

No one knows? Would like to find a definitive answer on this.

Well, there is an Alpine Ski posted in the For Sale section in California.....

If you are really jonesing for an Alpine Ski, it might be a better way to get one, rather than Chuck Yeagering it, and maybe damaging your game board some way.

If you really want to do this, the best way would be to get the manuals out for each, and walk through each chip. If every chip matches, chances are you could. Then again, if they changed routing or traces, you might not be able to. It's a crap shoot.

All I know about this system-16 page http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=634
But so both the EA and AS are on the SJ list for the Z-80 platform, but that doesn't mean it's just a rom drop-in. I never researched (yet) beyond that myself, so figured I'd follow. But maybe I answered my own question now as well, since both EA and AS (and JH/JK) look about identical

So reviving an old thread here... It just so happened that a friend of mine had a spare EA board that he wanted to see if it could be converted to Alpine Ski. I thought I would have a crack and see if it was as simple as a ROM swap. Doesn't appear so unfortunately... I removed all of the BA3 (EA EPROM's) as well as the CPU daughter board (not needed for Alpine Ski) and replaced them with the ROM set from alpine.zip. Looks like there is probably something else going on here that is required.

Looking at this old post ^ it seems as though there are likely some other PROM's that are different that could be required as well. Unfortunately I don't have a working Alpine Ski PCB to check this against. If anyone else does and has some idea's it would be great to see what they could be.

The other issue your friend might have is the monitor. AS is a vertical game. If he has to rotate his monitor, it may end up sticking too far out of the cabinet. Requiring him to cut a hole in the back door and use the Tatio black bubble, if he can find one. My last EA was originally an AS first, and required this to be done by the operator.

There are slight differences on the Game PCB around the PROM under the ROM board.
