Okay,

So I have a Star Trek with the Electrohome G08.
Before I go messin' with a semi-working G08, I wanted to get some advice (besides buying a fire extinguisher)

So here's the issue with the G08..
During gameplay, the screen will "bloom" when the amount of vectors being drawn is increased or decreased.

Ex: Finish 1st mission, screen draws big Enterprise and warps off the screen (not much being drawn), goes to 2nd mission and Enterprise zooms in and shrinks down to playfield (full screen being drawn.) During the transition of these two screens, the monitor blooms and the graphics stretch and return back to normal.

So where is the monitor failing that causes this?

Would a simple cap kit take care of this?

I've capped (3) 4900's and (1) disco monitor and feel comfortable with my soldering skills.

However, I really am going where no man has gone before 'cause I don't think this monitor has ever been capped in 30 years!

I'm from the school, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" - but this blooming is starting to get to me.

I'm really torn about poking around a g08.

Any advice?

Mine does this as well. I have a cap kit and will be installing it to see if that fixes the issue.

So where is the monitor failing that causes this?

Blooming is usually caused by the High Voltage going low. WG6100 and Amplifones sometimes have this same problem for Star Wars when drawing too many vectors blowing up the Death Star, dragging down the voltage.

Since voltage regulation appears to be the problem, one would think that replacing the capacitors in any voltage regulation section could only help. You may also want to adjust some of the voltage regulation controls, such as the voltage regulation pot on the satellite board on the HV unit. Or the HV regulation controls on the HV unit itself; see the Electrohome G08 FAQ on my website for more information about those controls.

G08 Finally Died...

Well, it appears that there is a problem with the HV section - came coins up, no picture.

Within the 1st minute, I could smell that lovely 'burnt electronics' smell. I opened the back door just to make sure that it wasn't actually on fire. It wasn't, but CLOSE! Just before I shut it down, I could see the flyback control arcing wildly inside thru the plastic. I don't think anything on the deflection board was fried (to my knowledge,) but the flyback seems to be toast.

As I started to read the various G08 posts - I have not been able to determine if there is a replacement flyback for the G08 available or should I just be looking for a replacement HV section at this point.

I had been planning on re-capping the G08 entirely, now it's a much bigger project.

Any advice on where to go from here?

Thanks,
Muel
