Hi, finally got around to looking at my centipede machine i bought in a job lot of machines last year.
After replacing one of the fuses in cabinet.. it powers up and the red light comes on the game board.. it takes credits, the mechanical coin counter goes up and the player one/two lights flash.. so looks like game board is good. (is there no speaker/sound on centipede?)

It looks like the monitor is dead, its getting 120V from the transformer ok but nothing.. doesnt even sound like its firing up, had a look at it (without removing from chasis) and it looks ok, no brown out or anything obvoius.

Anyone have any ideas? I notice there are a couple of fuses on it.. not checked them, would have to remove the monitor from the cabinet.. :/ i guess ill have to..

Any help much appreciated.

Probably needs a full rebuild including flyback, and needs to be gone over for cold solder.

As for your sound, check to see if the volume is turned up, and check that the speaker is connected. Rodents have a tendency to get into these things when stored a long time, and they tend to migrate up to the top, where the nest, shit, and chew wires...

Thanks for the quick response! I have not even checked up the top.. im a bit amazed the tube light still works! the machine is actually not in too bad condition considering it was left in a damp cold warehouse for about 10 years.. i guess.

i see there are rebuild kits available from competitveproducts.com im in n.ireland/uk hope postage isnt too expensive :)

btw.. sounds like game board is working doesnt it? well.. to some extent..

+1 on the rebuild kit. $40 for the best kit money can buy -- it will include a complete cap kit (with an extra cap to complete the 'curl' mod), HOT, regulator, flyback, horizontal width coil, both fuses.

I have also found LOTS of cold solder joints on these that I've worked on. On one of them, a component fell off in my hands when I flipped over the PCB the joints were so loose.

Get her up and runnin!

After checking the fuses and reflowing ALL solder joints, check the b+ voltage @ the R1 white wire.

If its over 138V (I believe) then high voltage shutdown is active.

Check: X04, X901, X902, X01, R909 for correct values.

If all are good try removing X701 and try adjusting R909 to get 121V @ white wire on R1.

If there is no diffrence after removing X701, check the right rear of the chassis for the notorious crack across the corner of the board.

I am more than willing to help resolve the issue.
