Electrohome G07 Picture is too wide....

I have an Electrohome G07 monitor in a 1982 Centipede cocktail table game.

The unit had not been powered up for about 5 years. About two weeks ago, I powered it up, and to my surprise the game runs great, picture is nice and clear. Game action is perfect.

However, the picture is too "wide" for the screen. That is, the centipede runs off the edges of the screen. I've tried the adjustments on the back of the monitor. After reading up on this forum, I figured out I need to adjust the vertical controls to adjust the width.

The pod does adjust the width, but it only goes from "really too wide" to "just a little too wide".

I've been searching the archives here, and am wondering if the B+ adjustment could help? Any other ideas?

Like I said, the rest of the picture is great. Bright, colorful, clear.

Also, while I have soldered a few things in the past, I don't know much about electronics, so I'm not sure I would want to rebuild the monitor if it needs it. If it comes down to that, is there anybody who does swaps on these units?

Thanks for any help or advice anyone can provide.

What Dokert is trying to say is that the working voltage for your monitor may be too high. Symptoms of this would be an image that's too wide for the screen, or maybe a slight ripple effect. In your case, since the monitor is oriented vertically, it would be too 'tall' for your screen.

This voltage is commonly called the 'B Boost' voltage, or 'B+' for short. Adjusting it is simple. Follow the instructions for testing and adjusting the B voltage on page 8 of the G07 manual found here:

Electrohome G07 Manual

Should be 120 volts DIRECT CURRENT (not AC)

Whatever you do, DON'T swap the monitor, you want to keep yours.

Yours can be fixed if need be and being a cocktail, the entire game can easily be taken somewhere to be fixed.

Thanks for the replies so far. And the patience with someone who has limited knowledge.

I tested the B+ today, and it was exactly at 120. From what I've read, since Centipede switches the orientation, if that were a problem it would have been the height of the picture that would have been affected.

I fooled around some more with the adjustments, and here's what I found.

To get the best size picture possible, the V-Lin is turned all the way to the right, and the V-height is turned all the way to the left.

The image is still too wide for the screen. The game runs off the edges.

Like I said, other than that, the image is perfect.

Any other thoughts? Should I call a local repair person, or is there anything else I can try??

Thanks and sorry for my lack of knowledge. I am willing to learn.

Given the description of my problem, am I at the point where I need to get some repairs? Other than the width problem, everything else looks great. However, I believe everything is original, so some preventative maintenance might be a good thing.

Does anyone know of a qualified repair person in Southeast Michigan (I live in Novi).

Are there any people on this board that perform repairs/reconditioning? If so, how do I contact them?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide. I'd really like to get the unit working right again.

I am a novice at this stuff, but just spent some time adjusting a GO7 in my cabinet. From what I learned, the V-lin sort of stretches the image, mine was near all the way right when I started and the left side of my screen was stretched, the letters on the left where twice as wide as those on the right. I ended up putting that pot in the middle which evened out the letters across the whole screen, and also shortened the (width) of the image a little. Than I just adjusted the V-height to fill the width of the screen. Now if I set the V-height to center or left of that the image would shrink way down to less than half the monitor width so some thing is not right if yours is all the way left and still running off the screen. Is it running off both sides?? There are also 2 small jumpers to the right of the H-sync that are used to adjust the horizontal and vertical centering a small amount, but wouldn't change the size.

Thanks for the reply.

Mine runs off both sides of the screen. I can't get the picture "small" enough.

If I adjust the vertical height (width) it only goes from too wide to even wider. Basically I can only see the last two digits of the score on either side.

Hearing that yours really shrinks when you turn it left of center makes me think I've got some other problems.

I'm curious if it could be the adjustment pot itself, or if maybe it needs a cap kit and other refurbishing.

If it has not been recapped then it needs to be done. This monitor is over 30 years old now. You can make adjustments until you're blue in the face and not get anywhere if there's bad capacitors in there.

Ken,

Thanks for the reply. I think you are right.

I found a local guy who does the repairs. I'm bring the whole unit in to have it gone over.

Thanks again to all for the help.
