EDOT with no talk - speech

So I just picked up an EDOT (http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=223896) and I am loving it, but the speech is dead. Sounds like I need to be looking at the Squawk and Talk board correct? Any hints or past experience with this kind of issue in an EDOT? All the other game sounds seam to be working, just no talking.

Yes, you need to look at the S&T board. Check the -5 volts, if that's not there, you won't get speech.

I'd go into test mode first, and run the sounds test, the speech test, and the channel test.

Thanks for the tips guys. I did a quick look at the board and noticed a few things that I missed the first time I looked at it. It looks like RM1 (4.7K, 8 pin, SIP) is blown. You can see it in the first picture. I am guessing that is my problem.

Another issue are the wire banks have some problems (I circled the first set I noticed with an issue - see 2nd picture). That particular bank has wires (or zero ohm resistors) K,L,D,F,G,and P. K has a zero ohm resistor but it looks like L,F and P had something in its slot, but may have been snipped out.

K (zero ohm), L (snipped), D (just solder pads). F (snipped), G (solder pads), P (snipped)

I looked at the next banks over and noticed as follows:

Q (zero ohm),R (snipped),S (wire),T (snipped)
U (zero ohm), V (snipped), W (wire), X (snipped)
Y (zero ohm), Z (snipped), AA (wire), BB (snipped)

Can anyone verify what they have in their wire banks???

Those are wire jumpers that were more than likely snipped from the factory. Im guessing they fully populated the jumpers and snipped them depending on what game the board got configured for. I have seen this on alot of other midway boards too.
I would replace that resistor network and go from there.

Thanks for the advise. Yeah, I will replace the SIP, fire it up and see what happens. I did get a picture of KLOVer p1899m's S&T board. Everything matched up with my board except the wire bank K-P.

Here is mine: K (zero ohm), L (snipped), D (just solder pads). F (snipped), G (solder pads), P (snipped)

And Dan's: K (zero ohm), L (snipped), D (zero ohm). F (snipped), G (zero ohm), P (snipped)

So, compared to Dan's my board is missing wire/zero ohm resistor at D and G OR my board is just a slightly different version.

Before I change D & G I will replace the SIP and report back.

I wouldnt go changing any jumpers before finding out what they are for. Compare yours to the other board and see if the same type eproms are used. There may be different jumper settings for masked roms and eproms. Some boards can be configured for different size roms also.

Replaced RM1 (4.7K, 8 pin, SIP) with no change. RATS! I did not notice it until I puled the board out, but someone soldered some resistors on the back of the blown SIP I assume in an attempt to repair the part of it that was damaged.

I pulled the ROMS out and verified them to MAME. What was weird was ROM U4 and U5 would not read in my programmer. It would just say the ROM was not inserted correctly. Was thinking that might be the issue, but with new ROMS installed, no such luck!

I found no other parts visually damaged. I will have to pull the board out again and go over each part.

Did you ever get this working..?

Am having no speech..sound show up in the list on test.
I have a switcher installed.
Led on board only lights up when game starts for a moment.

EDOT & DOT speech

FIRST: With the game on press the test button on the Squawk & Talk. If you hear speech then the board works. If no speech after you press the button then the board needs repair

SECOND: Do you get the proper flashes on the Squawk & Talk led at power up (a flicker then 5 solid flashes)? If no, make sure all voltages & wiring are correct, especially -5V. If voltages are not correct you need to address this before going further

THIRD: Go to test mode - sounds. If you do not see "VOICES" then the machine wiring is off at J5 on the SSIO. Pin 8 & 9 of J5 should be looped together. This tells the cab it is an EDOT and voices will show up under test mode. (Note if this wire was off it would also affect the flashers and chase lights I believe)

Here is a helpful page on the Squawk & Talk:

Only one flash..
Found two blown slow blow fuse 6.25 amp type.
Let's hope that's it.
The game saw the sound files last time I had it in test mode.

Ship it to CDJump, he's the master at fixing Bally stuff

I am digging this back up because I have been playing it a bunch and it is bugging me that I never dug into this issue.

First: When I turn it on and press the test button on the S&T board I do not hear speech.
Second: Turning it on I only get the LED to illuminate on the S&T board...no flashes. +5 is good (5.11V). I will go back and test for -5V.
Third: I see the "voices" in test mode, but I don't hear anything when I select them

Tested some voltages:

TP 2 (+5VDC): I get +5.22 VDC
TP 4 (-5VDC): I get -5.00

These were all done using TP1 as ground. They both look good.

I also verified my ROMS at U3, U4, and U5 to MAME images.

I hooked negative to TP1 and Positive to TP5 (Speech Volume Control Voltage test point). Moving the speech pot made the voltage change on my meter, so the speech volume circuit works.
