EDOT Mirrored inside walls- source?

I just put a call in with the original manufacturer of the material. Hopefully I'll know something later today on cost and minimum volume. It's not something they stock but was special made.

awesome, can't wait to get an update on this.

Pretty sure ProK had this stuff at one time but needed some measurements or a template-IIRC
for those with an inside connection with him you might be able to find out ;)

yeah I emailed him several times on this - offering to send my originals to him etc - but I never got a response from him

Maybe its an acrylic mirror. Kinda like plexiglass with a mirror coat. I know they sell the stuff at some Home Depots.

The op I believe is in contact with Brian reguarly and is local to him ;)

Yeah, Pr0k has been super busy, so don't take the returned pm thing personally... he's working like crazy. He's a friend of mine, though, so I can keep up with what's going on.

Pr0k came up with the idea of using a mirror finish stainless steel sheet since it's thin and would be easy to deal with. He would have to get the sheets laser cut, so price is unknown at this point, but an estimate for the sheets and laser cutting would be approximately $150.

I could provide him with both of my old ones and be the Guinea pig and see how it looks and turns out.. if other people would be interested. It would take a little time and money to get this project going, and I was told that the laser used to cut this is expensive.. but quick if we used the 20GA stainless steel.

What do you guys think? I could fund the project and do the mailing if Pr0k takes this on, but once they're done, they're done (no refunds). I'll see if we can get the sample done, but like I said laser time is expensive and we may need a few sets to make even the first batch worth while. I suppose we could evaluate the metal for it's mirror properties compared to the original before we go to cutting also.

Here's the metal suggested by Pr0k:

Like Khabbi said, i'm willing to play a role in this one. I couldn't do much with previous plans due to no longer owning a laser myself large enough to cut them and finding the materials to be non existent.

In talking to Khabbi we had the epiphany that we could use thin guage mirror polish stainless steel to accomplish this task which is something that I can simply set the wheels in motion and Khabbi can deal with fulfillment. Like he said though, no matter how you go about it this will be an expensive item. Laser cutting an item this size comes at a price and so does the high polish sheet material. However, the same process has been used on pinball machines for a while now in a product called 'mirror blades'. See those here:

You can see, the mirror quality is amazing it's very very thin. This would be a perfect replacement that is tougher than plastic.

I'll let Khabbi guage the true interest and if he wants to move forward then it will.

I think that's a great idea, and I just want to add - the ONLY issue I see is that stainless is a soft metal and while it can be polished to look like chrome, it does scratch and scuff easily. If in HUO environment, it would probably be ideal though.

metal proably is the most durable
but what about just using a mirror chrome vinyl and applying it over the exisiting?

I spoke with the company that originally made those peices for Midway back in '83 and they do not have the capability to make the same material now. The manufacturing set up is different now. I'm checking with another manufacturer to see if they could make it if anyone wants to go that way.

Rich, yea, tried chrome vinyl and wasn't pleased with it really. No matter how hard you try, some stupid speck of dust or something gets in there and you see it.. that and if you go over an original piece you see every bit of previous damage thru the vinyl so I chose not to go that way.

I too have tried to find manufacturers of this stuff, and yea, you could get someone to make it but you have to buy a hundred or more sheets of it. I was nowhere close to anything that would yield a realistic sellable product after costs. Closest I found was a company that made those carnival fun house mirrors but the stuff was too thin. That's what led me to the mirror steel. it's the right thickness, really strong, easily lasered, rolls for shipping, readily available, and looks fantastic.

If someone has a source for the material in small batches jeeze, that's great. I haven't been lucky enough to find anything like that.
