eBay now charges final value fee for shipping costs

Also, because we know buyers take into consideration the total cost of an item, also starting April 19, to encourage sellers to keep shipping costs low, the Final Value Fee will be applied to the total amount of the sale--including shipping.
============================================================

Thanks to all the sellers who list something for $1 and charge $399 for shipping

Sux. That is just going to force sellers to raise the shipping cost (not lower it) to compensate for having to pay 2 fees on it. Paypal and ebay final value. Grrr.

Probably thanks to me for reporting all the sellers who charge $499.99 for shipping the almost brand new $100 laptop. Ehhhh. No wonder everyone hates ebay. It's great if you're the buyer, but super shitty if you're the seller....
I already charge less than what shipping is, plus I never charge for packaging.
Thank you other ebay seller a**holes.

Well, I usually offer free shipping on almost all of my stuff anyway- unless I know it has a chance of selling for less than it costs to ship. Of course, I don't make my living off eBay either.

First eBay fixes the shipping rate, so that you have to offer shipping for no more than $2.99 for a video game for example...now they want to tax it with their eBay fees too? Hope they increase that rate then, it already isn't enough many times. Won't affect me much with the couple of eBay transactions I have to resort to nowadays, but it just seems like they want sellers to leave their site. It is simply amazing how upside down something like eBay can get in a matter of a few years. What's next, a monthly user fee for being an eBay member?

I have never seen such levels of greed than eBay. I mean seriously, fuck eBay.

well yeah that sucks. But it should stop most of the $1 items with $300 shipping.

the downside is it kills it for the honest seller. Just one more reason why i wont sell on ebay anymore...

Interesting that you didn't point out the other part

The other part of that ebay announcement is that they are giving up the insertion fees. That's frankly a REALLY big deal for them, and a generally good thing for sellers - now you can list your stuff at whatever price makes sense to you, and if it doesn't sell, you aren't out a ton of money.

The problem that EBay has is that like any other publicly traded company, they are expected not just to make money, but to grow. They could be a serious, and stable, money making machine, but that's not enough for the investors - they want stock price growth, and so they hire execs who chase the stock price, not the real business.

And so they do mixed-bag stuff like this.

Personally, I'm probably going to continue to sell, but my prices will reflect the fees that I have to pay. As they have done for a while now.

I still can't believe someone hasn't been able to rival them with another auction site with all the changes to their site in the last few years.

I buy on eBay all the time but I haven't sold anything in years.

That seems to be an ongoing problem for all American businesses and frankly I completely disagree with that idea with every fiber of my being. Makes me sick.

I don't sell ANYTHING on Ebay anymore. If it's valuable enough, I can sell it locally or to the right crowd such as on here.

If it's not worth much, I can do that too...or if it sits around too long, I'll throw it in the fucking garbage before I ever give Ebay another penny!

You're exactly right, any corporation is going to be like that and ultimately they don't care if the company folds eventually ,as long as the stock increases in value until they bail out. it's the nature of the beast.

If it's a family owned or whatever company, they'd be happy if they made the same amount each year, but ebay wants to make more each year.

Can this issue be bypassed by simply putting the responsibility for shipping arrangements and fees for shipping full-size games on the buyer? Of the few games I've shipped, I've had to get a quote upfront and then send the game for the exact shipping price after the auction ended.

I know this won't help with parts and so forth, but might help with game transactions.

When the cost of eBay and PayPal fees are so high that even buyers encourage you to sell games off-eBay to save you money, the system is broken. I hope they get it fixed soon, I am a fan of eBay and what it opens up to us all.

Yeah, it is the fallacy of the Whale Skew Chart.

A whale skew chart is a where you (usually a greedy consulting firm) chart out customers by how much profit margin they generate.

The truth is, most businesses make huge of their profits from a minority of customers, break even on most customers and even lose a bit on another minority of customers.

The idea is to filter out the bad (and most of the break even) customers. Infinite Profits!!!!!!

The real problem is that focusing on your best current customers doesn't create many new "good" customers.

Chasing the whale can actually be destructive to any business. It's some Captain Ahab Shit.

Even the skew chart is mostly a parlor trick.

You can get more info here:

An actual chart is on page 120

Note: I'm reading this book right now.
