hello everyone. i know this is an easy question for most of you but i was wondering......

i have a cactus jacks that im working on and there are 2 or 3 lights bulb sockets that are bad shape/rusty and not working.

is it possible to solder in light sockets off a jurassic park playfield just to get them to work? i have never done this before but it looks like its just 2 wires?

Short answer - yes you'd be fine as long as the same type of bulb is used (let's say old one is a #44 and the new one is also) as bulb sockets aren't proprietary.
Pay very close attention to the wire orientation and if there's a diode on the old one make sure the new one has one and the diode orientation is correct as well.

thanks alot guys. i just tried that tonite and it WORKED. i fixed one of the sockets and tomarow i will get to the other one that is hard to reach.............

however i am very curious............is it possible to put a light socket WITH a diode in a machine that doesnt have one? what would happen? this jurassic park playfield has both types on it and im just wondering if it would work or what would happen

OK - light sockets that have a diode attached are 3-lug sockets. The diode is required because these lamps are part of the Lamp Matrix - they are individually controlled by the games CPU. The diodes create the matrix, allowing each lamp to be turned on and off individually while using common wires on the matrix rows and columns.

The "regular" lamp sockets have two lugs and no diode - they are usually wired and controlled as an entire string of lights - all on or all off. These are GI (general illumination) lights, like in the backbox or under the playfield plastics.

Capisce?
