Love the sound these make right before they fly through the air..."ting!"

Yes, I know there's a special tool...that takes all the fun out of it though.

I've pinched many a finger trying to remove/reconnect those things

they're good at what they do, but god do I hate messing with those clips

The special tool I use is called a paper towel. Put that around the clip and it doesn't get lost.

I jerk these things off all the time. Sometimes it takes longer than I would like. I don't mind when it hits me in the face, but keep that stuff out of my eyes.

You just need a small flat blade screwdriver and a needle nosed pliers to remove them and the same needle nosed pliers to reinstall them.

The tool you linked to is for removing clips with tiny holes in them. Most joystick and button clips don't have holes, too small.

EDIT: That was directed at Zud. The tool Ken linked to is for the smaller ones, never even seen those before, pretty cool.

The clips I'm dealing with right now are about the size of a quarter.

If the clips have little holes in the tabs on the open side, you can use one of the tools like Zud pictured. You position the tool in the holes, squeeze, and the tool spreads the ring so you can slide it out.

There are several different sizes of snap ring pliers for different diameters/types of clips though. I'd probably suggest getting a Channelock set from the local big box store, they make one with interchangeable tips that can be switched to do internal and external rings. They're not great for auto or oilfield apps, but would be fine for arcade stuff.

Also -- for the small Nintendo clips -- I noticed these while placing an order at Mike's: http://mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?action=search&category=Tools&subcategory=E-Ring
