Ok, so I found a game on ebay for real cheap close to my house, so I bought it. When I went to pay, the shipping is 15X what the game sold for, with no local pick-up. I don't need shipping; picking up games is half the fun of this hobby. So... Do I call ebay on Monday, and try to back out, or do I bite the bullet and just chaulk it up to a life lesson?

What would you do?

you ask the guy for his address and tell him you will be there tomorrow to pick it up and pay in cash.

don't chalk shit up to life lesson.

I agree with Tron Guy. There is no reason you cant pick up a ebay purchase like that. If the seller is going to be a dick, just forget it, dont pay, and take the strike on your ebay account.

I don't know what the rules are with ebay. I usually take the stance that I made the bid or the mistake so I will pay the consequences. Shipping is the one questionable thing though in my mind as all too often sellers inflate the shipping to more or less steal from ebay circumventing charges/fees etc.

From what I understand you can back out of a transaction and possibly get away with just a negative feedback or basically a slap on the wrist.

I might actually try a middle ground in this scenario. I might contact the seller and explain the situation asking if it's possible to pick up the game in person and pay only a fraction of the shipping cost to cover his troubles. My guess is the seller can cancel the transaction without giving you negative feedback if you both agree to it. They may be able to adjust the cost through ebay and make things right all around. Or they may even suggest that you buy the game outside of ebay to put all the cash in their pocket. Ultimately it was your mistake but I think you do have the freedom to back out of the deal.

Regardless of what is specified as shipping, you can always do local pickup and pay. Just drop the seller a note and ask him for an address and pickup time and tell him you will be paying the auction price without shipping. I do it all the time for local Houston pickups, unless work gets in the way. Don't be a dick about it at first, he may have more games you want. ;)

Edit: Just saw the last post. If he won't go for no shipping cost, contact Ebay and explain the situation. They should be able to void the transaction or slap the seller.

Find His address and show up and tell Him to grab an end and help you load it!

My first move would be to talk to the seller by phone. Go to the ebay "advanced" page & click on the "find contact information". Enter the seller ID and the item number & you will get his phone number of record with ebay. Explain that shipping damage is your biggest concern and you ALWAYS pick up games in person. Make no threats if the seller is not cooperative, only state you have to talk to ebay about the best way to get your game. If that fails, I would go with one of the more aggressive plans listed above. Good luck. Denny

Agreed. Contact him, tell him you will be there and you are not paying for shipping. Offer cash. If he says no, his loss.

when I want back and looked at the auction, no local pick up was listed under shipping info. I have never run into that before, every game I have ever bought was always local pick up.

It used to be a scam to get around eBay fees by jacking the shipping cost but they started charging a final value fee on the whole transaction to stop that, no matter what it's going to cost him. Is the total with shipping more than you would pay for the game? You should have contacted him in the first place, he could be selling the game that's at his parents house in California and it would have to be shipped. I'd contact him and try to work something out, even if you shoot him some cash to cover his eBay fees to let the transaction go I'd do that.

Don't pay for shipping, just go get it. If they end up being asshats about it tell em to piss off and take the strike and forget about it. To hell with forking out extra unnecessary $$$

Ebay now charges fees on all shipping even oversea's so they are not missing any pennies anywhere

......which is why ebay will be a distant memory in a few years. I swear, I've never seen an organization that is more suicidal than ebay. Such a great concept when it was in its prime, circa '99-'02, after all of their stupid "improvements", they've successfully driven droves of people away from them. I went from being a 10K ++ buyer/seller to nothing in the past 3-4 years. Oh, wait-I bought a watch battery from them back in '11. Great job Ebay!
