I was thinking of picking up a DS Lite for my son (6) for Christmas or his Birthday. Anyone have recommendations on anything for it? Cases, good or bad ones? Any other thoughts on it? He is moving up from a Leapster and I haven't had a Gameboy since the original.

My 6 and 4 year old both have one and love it! It does take some time to catch on but once they do you can't break them away. I wouldn't get the rubber procectors, they are crap. The plasic covers that lock around them are great and save them from getting scratched. Be sure to buy lots of pens because they tend to get lost everywhere.

My 6 year old loves his.

I highly suggest you get the NERF molded case. I cant tell you how many times that has saved the thing from being dropped.

Yes... the nerf cases are the best. They aren't fancy, and they don't hold games or anything, but, they are rugged. I consider myself gentle with them, but I did have a few of the plastic pieces that hold it together break. The case still stays together well.

and dont forget to buy a flashcard

That would be more for a DSi, than a lite.

personally, i like the acekard2i.. works on ds lite, dsi and dsixl (youjust have to watch the firmware upgrades)..

as for the op... i would recommend buying at best buy. it will break - and if you have best buys service plan, you are covered for 2-3 years.. my son went through 3 dslites.. and we just upgraded to the dsi xl.. we only had to pay for new service plans each time. he gets about a year - year and a half before a hinge breaks.. and he treats it very well - no scratches on them otherwise.

I reckon that the 3DS is going to be a bit expensive at first.

DS Lite is great value. It also has the 2nd cartridge slot for Game Boy Advance games which you can pick up cheap.

Only issue with kids and NDS is some kids might have a tendency to lose cartridges. The flash cart is a great solution to this, they have all games on one cartridge and never have to swap it out. Just tape in the micro SD card.

Another option is this:
