I have a Joust I'm restoring and planning to drill the button holes this weekend. The CP is wood with a 1/8" or so metal plate on top. Found the 1-1/8" bit at HD with a pilot hole. Something like the picture attached.

Since I'm drilling into metal, then about 3/4" wood, does it make sense to drill tiny holes around the circumference of the button hole to weaken the metal/wood? Or just go at it with the 1-1/8" bit?

Thanks in advance...

You could use a Punch on the metal plates then use the plates as a template to drill through the wood.

How many holes do you need to drill? How this is the steel?

The hole saw image you have linked is just for wood. If you want to do steel and wood you need a bi-metal hole saw.

I picked up a 1 1/8" metal hole saw at Lowes for about $7 and the arbor was around $8. Home Depot doesn't carry a 1 1/8" that will work on metal.

Has anyone made those metal plates that go on a joust control panel? I would like to score one for a project game I am working on, except I want the joystick openings circles not ovals. ("sleeper" multi with a jrok board)

need to drill 4 holes (and bondo the middle joystick hole). the first attachment is my cp (have to do some cleaning and sanding yet), second is the metal plate on the cp. it's probably closer to 1/16", so i'm thinking the metal/wood combo bit at lowes would work fine. i'm just concerned that the bit will get dull after a couple holes. the last attachment is my goal and from fellow klover BaconSM. arcadeshop cp multi with the "stealth joust look".

With thin steel like that you won't have a problem what so ever. Your holes will be drilled in seconds :)

Yeah, I drilled about 4 holes into my dynamo cut corner metal CP, and about 12 holes into plexi with the bit I picked up at Lowes, and it still looks like new.

i got my bi metal hole saws from home depot and they work great (have broken 3 pilot bits tho but i have drilled out about 20 diffrent cp's )

i really reccomend drilling bolth the metal and wood at the same time tho so that your holes line up correctly (if adding plexi on to i also drill it at the same time )
with the wood and metal just mount it all togather and drill away (making shure its clamped down good )

if doing wood, metal ,and plexi i usually mark my hole centers with everything attached togather then i drill a pilot hole thrue all 3
then drill the 1 1/8 hole thrue the wood and metal at the same time then do the plexi seprate
so that it does not split or crack

doing things in one pass prevents things form not lining up later on
