Drawbacks on playing a cabaret instead of an upright?

A few additional differences:

TRON - The front of the mini cabinet has no black light or MCP back artwork.

Asteroids Deluxe cabaret - Missing the backlight, mirror, and backdrop artwork.

BattleZone cabaret - No periscope

Scott C

Don't forget Omega Race.
The upright and cockpit benefit from detailed artwork and blacklight / mirror / backdrop affects. The cocktail and cabaret do not.

That said, I have only one cabaret - an Omega Race. It stays in the collection due to its "cute factor". LOL

Cabaret Mini Arcade List

List compiled by Scott Caldwell and Todd Tuckey 7-31-06 - Revision 3
--------------------

Legend:
* - Shows a dedicated cabinet I still need good pics of.
+ - Shows a dedicated cabinet newly made since year 2000.
# - Shows a dedicated cabinet Todd @ TNT still needs to
complete his collection of all mini/cabarets.

CLARIFICATIONS
==============
- Atari normally called their smaller cabinets "cabarets". They
also made games in smaller cabinets for the European market
known as a "euro", which is larger than a cabaret, but smaller
than an upright.
- Midway and most of the rest of the industry called them "minis"
- Sega/Gremlin sold two small styles of cabinets, one known as
"trimlines" and "super minis". The trimlines were a smaller
version of a typical mini, while the super minis were really
short, so they were almost cocktails.

Current list stands at 112 and includes new mini games made
since year 2000, the same game released by different
manufactures in different mini cabinets (Crazy Climber) and
some trivia/poker style games/cabinets.

Cool list of Cabarets! Do you know of a list that indicates how many different 19" monitor Cabaret Titles were made?

Last edited:
Todd Tuckey and I partially compiled that list (19"), but never verified all the titles. Further, there are a few additions to the mini/cabaret list (revision 4), but I'll have to check my master list to see what they are (updated many years ago).

Scott C.

One thing that bugs me about my Centipede cabaret (puns!) is the speaker is down by your knee so you don't get the same great distribution of sound like you do in the upright.

Been on the look out for a cabaret Ms.Pac or Galaga ect..

I think this is the only thing I have room for now in my loft. lol

I would rather have the Space Encounters cabaret versus the upright for the controller alone. I can get better scores on the cabaret.

I hope they still have it at Funspot cuz I love that game.

Thanks everybody for their replies. I don't know anybody with a cabaret so what kind of space savings are we talking about? 3 cabarets per 2 uprights? or 4 cabarets to 3 upright ratio?

Some are not very ergonomic for 6'2" tall dudes like myself (though neither is Asteroids Deluxe full upright).

I'm 6'1" and I have a tougher time with Nintendo cabs than I do any mini I've come across. For me, it's the height of the control panel that bothers me. I'm pretty sure that my Pac cabaret's control panel is taller than a Nintendo control panel.

Yeah that's one of the things I should have elaborated on outside of viewing angle. Having to hard angle my wrists upward sucks, I need to have my palms resting on the CP.

With AD, I'm too tall and the top part of the screen is not visible, I get the marquee blinding my face, unless I do some douchey wide-leg stance or hunch over. Definitely need a stool for that one.

It depends on the games. Look up their flyers and see. But to me it looks like like a 4:3 ratio of mini's to uprights. But it all depends on the space you have. Are you trying to save height, width, or depth? Cabarets are great for saving height, like in a basement with a low ceiling or depth if you've got a narrow room. But at that 4:3 ratio you're only saving space if you have a lot of games vs just a few.

yah they are all different..

they can fit into weird places a upright wouldn't though, I have a few that are just in random places around the house an upright could never fit.

I have 5 cabarets on the back wall of my home office, could only fit 3 uprights there.

Best profile for space is the Williams cabarets but good luck finding some for sale.

The atari machines with 19 inch monitors dont really save you much space at all.

Thanks, this is really helpful. Looking at the DK flyer, the width difference between the upright vs cabaret is only 3 inches or so. Yes, not much space saving in that direction.

I like rearranging and shifting my games and layout around, and they add a nice balance for finishing off a row or corner or whatever where an upright either won't fit, blocks a passageway, or blocks line of sight

Some are shallower, some are narrower, some are shorter, overall the Williams are the best size from what i've had, not to mention sexiest with the full art package, but i've also grown to love the woodgrain

There is no game that is better played on a 13" monitor than a 19". Only cabaret I would get are the few with 19"'s - Centipede, Tempest, whatever else.
