Finally, my Gun Fight is up and running!!

I'd like to thank Alan(Alan173) for babysitting me thru many, many checks on the power supply, boards, and monitor. Replaced one transistor on the monitor board and put in a cap kit; that took care of the monitor problems.

Jim(YodaInMn) came over tonite and actually did the work on the monitor board. Thanks Jim!! He also soldered in a broken off coin door wire and fixed the start button; so now both coin slots and the start button are good to go.

Alex Yeckley(Elektron Forge) fixed the boards. They had multiple problems.

Andre'(Rhombus) fixed and rewired the power supply; which was completely hacked up...you wouldn't even believe how bad. It was putting out over 22 volts!

Thanks again to Brian(prOk) for reproducing the "shots" decals for the bezel. No matching font was found so Brian cut them by hand....

After playing about 20 intense games with my wife I had to call it quits because she kicked my ass all over! I won maybe 4 games....how disgusting.

The last time(before tonite) that I played this game was at a KOA campground somewhere in South Dakota in 1979. Gun Fight was the only arcade game(cocktail version) in the gameroom. There was about 7 or 8 pins and a jukebox.

I'm so happy that its finally running! And its a blast to play; the sounds are really awesome, too....

Oh, and the "pardner" parody is really on the screen. When you have more than 1 credit in the game after a game is finished, it says "Hey Pardner, you have credit." Not partner....not sure if the Japanese did that on purpose or not!

Awesome John. That game looks fun as hell. It feels good doesn't it? I feel the same way about the Sea Wolf you sold me. She's up and running and in the game room now. Can't wait to try Gunfight out. Congratz!

Nice to see that you got everything all back together John, my daughter was in total melt-down mode on the way home-- Also too, I'm glad I got to spank you on your game the very first time evar starting it up as well, I know that will be short-lived too. I'm just waiting for your TG Perfect Gun Fight game score in the records next, you bastage!!
Oh, beautiful game there John, one of my all-time favorites in your collection. You should snap some more regular lit photos of the cabinet.

Thanks again Jim for coming over and taking care of business, I really appreciate it!

Hey, its not me that is good at the damn game, its my wife!! She totally waxed me 17 out of 20 games....

congrats!! I remember that game from a local bar. Its a great one on one type game. If you want some one you can beat I'll stop over:)

Tom, you can come anytime just give me a call....you can play against my wife; I want to see her beat the hell out of somebody other than myself!

I remember seeing that game at some wax museum in LA back in 1980. I gripped both handles and got a light electric tingle so they had a ground issue.

Fun game, 'pardner'. The use was intentional I suspect as that is a common Western movie term.

Thought I'd post a few more pics since the artwork on the game is so cool. Its in really good shape considering it sat in a horsebarn for God knows how many years. There's just over 19,000 on the coin counter.

Pic#1: I love the side art. One of my favorites of all time.

Pic#2: below the coin door; I love the bullets zinging all over the place, one going thru a can! Coin door and speaker covers have a red tint to them, different from your normal grey and black Midway coin doors....

Pic#3: Bezel is near mint, you can see the "shots" decals that prOk made. Control panel is ok, I'm missing the plastic topper for the right cowboy control....

Pic#1: Closer pic of the upper side art. I love the bowed legs and square jaw on the cowboy...

Pic#2: Final full pic. I just love the colors and the overall look of the game....

The game is surprisingly difficult. You would think it would be easy, just point and shoot; I mean, the game is so primitive. Not the case, though. If you're aggressive and run towards your opponent with guns-a-blazin', you're opening yourself up for an easy counter attack. If you try to run and save bullets, you also take the risk of your opponent attacking you with guns-a-blazin'. What you might think is strategy may actually get you shot. Its surprisingly cerebral believe me!

Good to hear you got it working again! I love my Gun Fight - settles a lot of arguments in the house....beats flipping a coin. Mine is in great condition - the only thing it's missing is the yellow gel on the back of the translite. Know of a place to get one that is close to the same color? I've tried plain yellow - doesn't look quite right.

BTW - is that a steel repro joystick on the right?

You are right about the game play. There is a lot more strategy there than people give it credit for.

Thanks! Glad to see there is others here on klov that have this awesome game. I can't help you in finding the yellow bezel overlay; I wouldn't even know where to look. LMK if you ever find one.

The joystick on the right is missing the plastic topper. Know where I can get one of those??

No idea where to find a replacement joystick plastic...but if I ever come across any Gun Fight parts I will let you know. Not too many of us that have them out there.

One thing I like about the game is that it is technically in stereo. The shots and hits come out of different speakers. Not too sure there were many stereo games at the time.

Still looking for a Bally Astrocade - they used the Gun Fight controls as a basis for the home console controllers. Gun Fight was also included as a game on the console...didn't require a cartridge. I guess if I ever have a need for a gun controller replacement I could modify the Astrocade controllers :)

Funny you mentioned the Bally Astrocade...I have one; and with Gun Fight! I also have Wizard of Wor and Artillery Duel, too. Had one back in 1986, a friend of mine sold me his for $1. That's right, $1! He was sick of it I guess. It got "lost" when I was in the military 20 years ago. I bought one off ebay about 3 years ago....

Awesome John! Your game is in OUTSTANDING shape...and like you said...how can you not just love the look of this unique style cabinet!

Glad to see collectors coming together and the result is working and totally CLASSIC arcade game. That old XM chassis should run another 35 years! Thanks Jim (YodainMN) for the obvious excellent solder work!

Strategy - that is exactly what I LOVE about the older black and white games (besides playing them growing up).....the subtle strategies. Like the bank shots off the top and bottom...or being able to shoot through the obstacles closest to you...but having to shoot down your 'Pardner's' obstacles.

Funny to think this game was one of the first if not the first 'fighting style' game where you face off against each other in a dual. I read it was also the first game to use the Intel 8080 CPU and the first game to be imported from Japan (originally came over as a TTL game called Western Gun and then converted by Nutting).

Just a GREAT piece of history and fun to play....AND....the sounds are awesome!

Here is mine...it gets quite a bit of play in my arcade!

One of my local friends has one and it is a blast to play! Being an owner of one mid 70's black and white, I can tell you the gameplay takes you by surprise! But back to Gunfight, great game, with very nice controls. Every owner has a piece of history in their arcade!

That is a sweet looking Gun Fight. What's the deal with the plywood platforms you have your games resting on? Is that for flood protection or something else?
