Dragon's lair CPO... Repro or Original? And a Version of Factory side art placement.

I would put bolts in it the CP and call it a day.
That's what I would do as well. The holes don't really bother me nearly as much as the inconsistencies on the repro.

Maybe the repro wouldn't bug me once I got used to it, but doubtful that my OCD wouldn't be distracted by it. :p

there was just a whole thread about this.. where people were arguing about keeping games original vs restore.

Me personally I would rather have any original art or part over a poorly done repro even if the original is a bit hacked up.

If I was looking to buy one I would probably pass on one that has that repro art and wait for as clean an original machine as possible... so it also may limit your market for the game if you go to sell it down the road if you mess with it too much.

I had an original NOS CPO at one point but sold it because it was de-laminating and didn't want to risk ruining my already nice, original CPO.

Sorry for the huge picture but in this case maybe it helps.

You know, that original nos cpo looks a lot more like the repro than my original. Have to guess that wear with time and removing the black paint that was on mine faded it out and brought out more fading detail than was meant to be on the original. Wow. If that is what nos looks like, repro isn't as far off as I thought.

Thanks for sharing that picture!

For posterity, here is my original. I've since got those cig burns out with a magic eraser and powder coated the bolts. Maybe it's the flash making the sky appear different?

As for the side art...
I worked next to the guys who installed it on new machines. There never was any exact placement. It was always at the whim of the guy working that station on any given day,

Sorry for the necro bump:

I've picked up a DL recently that as far as I can tell is all original, but 3 things bother me about the side art:

1) It's actually there, and complete. This thing was clearly in a barn or shed for many years, I find it hard to believe it survived this well.
2) The placement is slightly different from one side to the other
3) The art was cut out around the monitor bolts and rather amateurishly. There are cuts/slashes extending around the bolt head from where the installer just hacked away at it.

Given swood's comments above, if it were only for #1 and #2 I could believe the artwork was original. #3 really makes me think someone put repro artwork on.

Has anyone else seen this kind of shoddy side art installation that they know is factory installed?

Definitely repo'd. Factory side bolts always have the artwork under them.

It's certainly not factory installed.

The side art was the first step in the assembly. So carriage bolts were pressed through the art into the cabinet holes.

Anyone trying to install repro side art over the bolt heads would find it impossible to get it to lay flat. Obviously the person installing this side art cheeped out on the labor to remove the monitor first, and then did some hack job of cutting around the bolts.
Sad.
But easy to fix.

Congrats on the new DL pick-up!

All the complaining but nobody standing up to actually do it. And I don't mean some inkjet nonsense on flimsy vinyl textured laminates, I mean a real repro silkscreened on the closest match in thickness and texture to the original that's available today. Stop criticizing and go do it, show us all how it's done if it's so terrible.
