Taking on the restoration of two ICB at the same time. Both games work, but the cabinets have a lot of cosmetic issues. These are both going to get a full cosmetic uplift - new laminate, new art, restored coin doors, rebuilt bases. I'll probably wind up finding more issues as I tear into them more.

I'll try to post regular progress updates here.

What I have done so far:

1. Started tearing them down, to include removal of glass bezels, control panels, and coin doors.
2. Removed vinyl from sides and fronts of both machines.

What I need to do next:
1. Finish tear down, to include PCB, playfield, and power supply.
2. Finish vinyl removal (still some black vinyl remaining on both machines).
3. Strip control panels and rebuild all four joysticks.

And there will be TONS of photographs to catalog the restoration on my One Drive account here if you are into that sort of thing.

Thanks for looking.

Looks like my patio, only with 2 ICBs instead of 3 Midway cabarets.

Assembly line restorations FTW.

Was it hard to remove the vinyl? Did you use a heat gun?

Yes. And Yes.

The vinyl is very brittle due to it's age and putting a mild heat to it actually keeps it together. I assume the heat also loosens the grip of the 30 year old glue a bit as well.

As you can see in one of the pictures, one of the four sides came off with very little effort. I guess the vinyl guy in the Taito factory was "mailing it in" that day.

Thanks for the comments. I will try to keep this thread up to date for all of you.

Nice work! I think I'm more impressed with your space!!! That looks like a dream cave!

Looking forward to how these will turn out.

Will you post links to the bits used?

What laminate and where to buy it from?

You used a heat gun to remove the original vinyl, did you just pull it off with your hand, or any tool used to help it?

Will you post links to the bits used?

Sure, but I actually purchased the art packages and the new bezel glasses many years ago and I'm not 100% certain where they came from. I'll see if I can dig up the old documentation or perhaps I can get the maker from the return address on the packages they were shipped in.

Aside from the art, the only thing that truly needs replacing is the laminate and I simply intend on taking the vinyl sides that I pulled off to a local cabinet shop and having them sell me matching laminate.

At times, I used a razor blade to peel up the edges so that I could get enough between my fingers to start peeling it back. I started with just my fingernail, but that got painful after about an hour forcing me to go to the razor blade. This would have been easy if the vinyl wasn't so damn brittle. Just when I thought I was going to be able to pull away a large chunk, it would break or tear forcing me to start again.

As you can see from the photos, one entire side came off in one piece. It didn't rip or tear at all. Not sure why that side held together and the other three did not.

Well ... SIX years later, these are finally done.

2025 is the year to get more projects done. Be on the lookout for more restoration photos from the guys in The Barn!

Lots more before and after pics on my One Drive if you are interested: Ice Cold Beer Resto

Wow, that took a while. Did you find anything other than cosmetics during the restores?

I have a Zekes Peak and just getting it running consistently took a lot of fiddling. Finally all good but I changed resistors on the motors, 3D printed new rod ends, adjusted the travel at the top many times before it was good.

Does the one on the left in the left side view have a brand new cabinet? Kinda looks like it on the back.

They are both brand new cabinets. After staring at the old cabinets for a few years, we just decided to have Toney Arrowood in North Carolina build us two fresh new ones.

Probably should have mentioned that in my post. :oops2:

We are still in the "fiddling" stage. Now that the cosmetic potion of the build is over, we are tinkering with both of them to get them to play perfectly. We replaced the belts, tightened up the drive motors a bit, and are still tweaking little things to get them play nice and smooth.
