Hi, complete newbie to the forums here.

I was recently given Double Dragon and Wizard of Wor machines that were in ROUGH shape. They were stored in a barn for a few years (yes, it makes me mad too) and were full of dirt and such. I cleaned them up as best I could and up until recently they actually still worked. Now I'm not sure if the monitors are just dead or if there's a larger problem. Most everything else on the machines except for general wear and loose controls seems fine. I've never owned one of these before, much less thought about repairing one.

Can anyone recommend what these might be worth in their current state? As much as I hate to get rid of them times are tough but I don't want to just give them away for nothing and if they can be rescued or restored I'd be interested in making them more valuable.

Thanks for dealing with an arcade standup greenhorn.

Price will depend on location. In WA the DD non-working is worth about $150 and the price works its way down based off of cabinet condition and why it isn't working. The WoW may be worth more based off of condition. Restoration parts will cost more than the value they add to the machines. It really isn't worth restoring either of the machines if you are only looking to sell them.

So both machines suddenly had their monitors go out?

First.. WELCOME!! You have definitely found the right place to get help and learn how to work on these old games.

The first thing to do is check the fuses and make sure all the connectors on the boards are seated firmly.

Take some pics and post them..lets see what you got!

Thanks everyone!

I have some pics I can post up in a little while from right after I cleaned up these poor victims of neglect.

I'm in the Austin, TX area.

WoW was apparently working a few days before I got ahold of it. DD worked until it was moved from one location to another and then shortly after didn't.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I'm totally lost on these old machines. I'll get those pics up in a little while.

Okay, here's a few pics from after I cleaned them up. The before's would break your heart. These things were COVERED in dust and dirt and even had mud insect nests stuck along the insides.

I can get some better pics tonight or tomorrow of the insides.

Alright, at long last I got off my butt and took some pics. First, Wizard Of Wor.

I tried plugging this in and the circuit boards on the left in the first pic started SMOKING so we yanked the cord on that one real fast. No other noticeable response from the machine.

This is after I cleaned them out.

And now Double Dragon. A small miracle occurred with good ole Double Dragon and when we plugged it in the screen WORKED! Huzzah! The insides still need some extra cleaning.

My question on this one... the controls still work but they're crappy from years of abuse and filth on the insides. If I were to sell this machine would I be better off replacing those controls myself or just selling it as is?

hard to say what to do even after looking at the pics. start cleaning and see what you end up with.

looks like the Double Dragon has some serious wood swelling on the backside. how brittle is the wood?

FYI that Double Dragon is in an what looks like an atari vector cab..gravitar maybe.. def not original cab or control panel. like one of the other members said maybe you might get $150 for it..

How would I go about cleaning the parts inside? Some of those electronic bits have a pretty nice coat of dust. Is there a good safe way for me to shine them up?

Thanks again for all the advice, everyone. :)

Do you have a shopvac? Get those dead leaves out of there! I hope you are able to get them up and running.

Based on what you have posted so far, I would suggest you sell them without cleaning them up any more for a couple of reasons:

1) You want to make money. You probably have a 50/50 shot at making them worth LESS by damaging things with anything you try.
2) If you improve their condition, you may be less interested in selling them. :)

Unfortunately, you may not get a lot of money for them in their present condition and even if you do get them working and fix them up you still may not get a heck of a lot more money for them. Some guys are trying to sell desirable games in excellent condition and can not even get buyers at $300!

If you want to maximize your profit, you may want to part them out (sell all the pieces here or on greedbay) but packing things well for shipment takes time and money (for boxes & supplies).

My 2c ...

I heard you didn't want to use a vacuum... or was I misinformed?

use a vacuum for all the non pcb type of parts, and i usually use compressed air to get the monitor chassis/pcb's/etc clean. you should be fine using a vacuum. i don't see where it'd harm anything.
