So, I played through Double Dragon 2 this weekend, and I have to tell you, it's like Double Dragon 1.5. The NES game is so much better. Like double the levels, cut-scenes with a storyline, albeit run-on sentence story style, and I even like looking at it more. The environments are new looking and fresh - where in a lot of places the arcade could confuse you into thinking you're looking at the first one.

Not saying I don't like it - because I have the original and love it on both platforms. It's just wow, it doesn't stack up to me. Which you'd think it would be the opposite. Even with a graphics advantage NES win.

I knew it was different before playing it but wow, it's an entirely different game with a few of the same bosses and characters.

+1

I remember beating the NES version like 50 times with my older brother on hard mode. When I finally played the arcade version, I thought to myself "Seriously? This is the ARCADE version?" I think the same could be said for Double Dragon 1. Don't even get me started with Double Dragon 3 (arcade or NES). I just try to blank that one out of my memory. Though, one could argue they are just entirely different games on different platforms.

Clearly you are a gamer of the highest caliber my friend. In fact, I will be adding you to my contacts on here for this post alone. LOL DD2 Nes is so good I don't know why more people don't talk about it. What other 2 player simultaneous beat-em up came close to DD2 at the time? None! :) I do enjoy 1 in both forms, 3 I've only played on the NES and that's good enough for me.

Haha. Well, if we're talking more than just the NES, Golden Axe was out in the arcades by then (1990) and we played that a lot as well as the Sega Genesis version. Then soon after, Streets of Rage and Streets of Rage 2 came out. Streets of Rage 2 was like the "Double Dragon 2" on Sega Genesis for my brother and I. Beat that game I don't know how many times. :)

It wasn't until a couple of years later that it came out on the Sega Genesis. Though, by that time Streets of Rage and Streets of Rage 2 came out as well. I was speaking only of the NES library, but golden axe is really sweet - i still like DD2 better though. LOL

Streets of Rage was awesome.

DD2 on the NES was a better game no matter how you look at it. From my understanding DD2 for the arcade was actually released as a quick fix for the elbow cheat in the first game. I honestly can't remember where I read that but it oh well.

I have to disagree with you on the DD on the NES being better though. I loved the arcade version mainly for one thing the "Double" part. Two players at the same time. The NES took that away, and changed everything I loved about the arcade version. You should have seen the look on my face when I finally got DD for the NES thinking it would be like the arcade. I was a pretty pissed off grade schooler. :)

But yes... Double Dragon 2 on the NES is a much better game. (don't tell anyone, but sometimes when I'm in my office I play the last boss music from DD2 NES in all its 8-bit glory and just smile like like I was a kid again. I know, I'm sad, but that music ROCKS!)

I disagree....While the Nes version is good it's not better. I even like DD2 over DD!

At first I hated the sequel cause of the control scheme but you get used to it. Some other gripes were level 2 was the same as DD and the Boss "Willey or Willie" was the same....

Sorry, I should take that back. DD1 on NES is not better than the arcade version per se. I was just making a point that it could be argued both ways. Ultimately, it comes down to the fact that the console and arcade versions are just very different. I still think the arcade version of Double Dragon 1 is a fun 2P game to play and is definitely one of those memorable classics for guys like me who grew up in that era.

I guess this discussion is really about DD2. I think majority rules in favor of the NES version. :D

I prefer DD1 on the NES over the Arcade version.

Despite massive glitching and only having 1 player, the NES version has aged better. The arcade version is too freakin slow. And the hit detection is wack.

But the GBA or XBOX360 versions are probably the best. They redid the arcade version with better speed, controlls and hit detection. The 360 version was redrawn for HD.

dd2 arcade is just that, an arcade game...(and i heart, btw)
dd2 on nes is great(also hearted) but a whole different game.
Nes was smart when they used to do this by making a game better for home but giving it a better replay and more drawn out plot(since you have way more time with it)

They tried this with tmnt 1 as you can see and later has to release a tmnt2 arcade(because tmnt arcade is all the game by it self..)

lets seeeeee

Double Dragon 3(already mentioned)

Ninja Gaiden = its whole own thread

Ninja gaiden was exactly the same type of conversion, from a 2 p beat'em up- to something, lets just say, different..more?less?

Also, the special game feature on DD1 is the best 8 bit fighting game.

Cool. Never played the Xbox360 version. I gotta check that out sometime. Thanks Norton!

They "pulled" the 360 version.

But there is a way to get it if somebody recommends it to you via their system.

If you PM or post your 360 ID, I will try to "Recommend" you a copy over the next week or so.

That should allow you to download the demo or buy it.

I never got to play either of the DD games in the arcade. DD2 is my favorite NES game though, and I've played it many many times. I still can't beat DD yet, but DD2 isn't too difficult.

Don't forget:
Battletoads Vs DD

But as far as DD arcade goes, I prefer Combat Tribes.

Double Dragon 2 on the NES is awesome. I remember the day my mom bought it for me when I was a kid. I still have it, and yep, I still play it.

I really don't prefer the "Kunio Kun" control scheme of 2/3.

I like PUNCH and KICK to have their own buttons. Not this left/right BS.

Cheat!? How could you? Please don't take away my moment of glory like that. DD was the first game I ever "figured out" how to beat on one quarter.
