I have both a dedicated DK and DKjr, and I was thinking of just doing a double DK so I could free up some space in my arcade (although I don't know if I could ever let my DK go, it's one of my favorite games from when I was a kid)...

Without getting into whether I'm getting rid of one or the other (just easier that way :), I have a few questions...

How is the gameplay on the Double Donkey Kong board when playing DK, besides the audio being off? Is the timing dead on with the barrels and the rest of the game? I've played some 60-1's and the timing was horrible on them, so I want to stay true to the gameplay if possible. I do believe that Steve Weibe originally mastered DK on the Double DK board, and if that's so, the timing must be spot on right?

I have also been thinking of getting the DKII Roms, and I have the 2 board set.. is this an easy install and un-install? Does installing them change the gameplay of the original DK? I've been jonesing to try out the DKII game so I'm close to buying..

Thanks!

Dont know on Double DK

But DK2 is a bitch to install and uninstall but the gameplay on DK is spot on and you get a great game in dk2.

I would go that route... Dk/Dk2 and DkJr ...

But DK2 is a bitch to install and uninstall

D2K and all of the Brasington high score save kits are very easy to install. Not hard at all. I guess if you've never removed or inserted a socketed chip it could be a little scary. But, really, the process is very simple.

I've never seen a double DK board, but installing DK2 should be easy if the z80 isn't soldered like in some early DK's. Unless there's some funky ROM or design conflict that would keep DK2 from proper application on this board. Does anyone here have a Double DK board with DK2 that could specifically comment?

Here is an excerpt from Dokerts new DK harnesses. I am not familiar with the harness, but from what I gather, you could stack all 3 boardsets and just move one part of the harness to change games. That is, if you were clever and knew what you were doing.

Okay I hobviously have no clue but please humor me. So, let's say I have dedicated DK. I buy this harness, shlap it in my machine (solder to the coin doors, etc.), and now I can swap in a DK Jr. Board or a DK3 Board without doing anything but plugging in the different boards?

As long as you have the rainbow cable connecting the pcb to the video board. You could actually bracket all 3 pcb's in a row in your cab and just transfer the edge connector when you want to change games. - Barry

It wasn't too bad installing the D2K kit in my cocktail (although mine has 4 boards, and the audio board was covering the Z80 socket, so I had to move it to the top half). It wasn't real easy putting the kit in, but not too hard either. I wouldn't want to keep switching it though. Unless you plan on submitting scores to TG, there's not really any reason to remove it though. (To submit a DK score, you can't have any add-on boards installed. If you do plan on doing it, probably better to just keep a spare DK board and keep it dedicated to DK.) You can play both DK and D2K on it, and if you have it set to Freeplay, you can switch between the two games at any time by holding down 1 and 2 start for a few seconds. My only complaint is you can't set the number of men different on the 2 games. I prefer DK at 3 and D2K at 6 (since it's so hard)

Dk / dk2

It was easy to install DK2 - as mentioned before just remove and install chips per directions. As for game play there is no difference with DK2 install. I just was able to complete my first complete run through all 8 levels. I was excited to see what was in-store the second time through and the spitting fire balls made me laugh when I saw them. Current high score - 32,600. Tough game, well worth the money money. I'll post pictures of conversion as soon as the complete art package is received from This Old Game.

I didnt mean it was hard to install. Its hard to install and uninstall over and over. And the risk of bending of a pin is high.
I was doing it for awhile now for DK WR's but got tired of it with the hassle and just started trying for DK2 records.

I just got my roms right now. I am going to go install them and I will let you know my opinion of how it is.

by the way Arcadeshop - good guys, fast delivery every time.

Doesn't Arcade Shop have a high score save kit that allows DK and DKII to be on the same board at the same time. Don't know if that helps you out, but it might.
