Castle Wolfenstein 3D became Doom, which became Quake, which was then turned into an arcade game. All of which are GREAT games!

There, so now this thread is relevant!

Check out this story on the new DOOM. Can't wait to play this...

And if you can, go back and play those three classic PC games from ID Games.

I can still remember buying Castle Wolfenstein from a shareware software rack on a real 5" inch floppy disk to play on my 286 computer with 1/2 meg of ram running DOS. And it was FANTASTIC!

I was totally blown away...

I was huge on Quake back in the day. While that arcade version looks neat, that control panel looks impossible to play it with any real accuracy.

Up/Down/Left/Right buttons on the left is similar to the keyboard layout but I cant see being able to use the trackball with the right hand AND push the fire button at the same time as quickly as is needed. Just seems like it would be a real POS to control.

I played competitive Quake 3 before things got insane with plasma wall riding and stuff. We still occasionaly play it on old-school gaming nights with ioQuake 3 build + the updated maps from Quake Live (vortex portal got an amazing balance by placing the railgun at the center platform accessible by the center teleporter instead of at each base's spawn. Huge balance change.)

I was in the alpha and beta for this new Doom because I bought both copies of the recent Wolfenstein game, but I just couldn't get into it. Dirty Bomb and now Overwatch have been my thing.

One game that's tough to go back to is Duke Nukem. Fabulous game for the time (as well as Shadow Warrior) but the engine is hard to get back into after playing games with mouse look, that engine just doesn't accommodate that as well.

The new Doom is very fun, I've been playing it since release date..

but Overwatch is gonna kill it. Just played that last night, way more fun way more customizations.

I might buy an Xbox One or PS4 just to play this...so far I've resisted jumping into this latest generation (the first one I haven't bought a new system).

Don't know if you ever played PSX Doom. There's some obvious downgrades from the PC version, but it has a feel all its own...a killer ambient soundtrack by Aubrey Hodges (he's done a lot of video game soundtracks through the years), and some of the levels are darker/creepier than their PC counterparts. I have a PSOne with the screen attachment, and every so often I fire up some Doom and Tempest X. Still fun games after all these years.

On Steam, Doom got a ton of bad reviews. I have no opinion, as I haven't played it.

Overwatch, on the other hand, looks fun as Hell! It has a lot of the elements that I enjoy about the Team Fortress games that I play a lot(Team Fortress Classic, and Fortress Forever). Quake Live is pretty fun, too.

Doom multiplayer got panned... Doom single player has been praised as the second coming of toast.

The Doom multiplayer received mixed reviews but i don`t care for MP anway. The Doom singleplayer campaign is the best shooter experience I had in years. I think it`s even better than the 2014 Wolfenstein. Should be played on PC to fully enjoy it IMO.

I used to have Quake 1 super capture the flag hosted too, but does not run well with my new server. Also Team Fortress 2 hosting.

The single player is incredible. The only thing that could have been a little better imo are the environments. While still good you're only really seeing the Mars base for the majority of time. How insane would it have been to have them back on Earth like in part 2? Hell looks awesome though

I have zero interest in competitive shooters so never got into things like TF, CS, or any of the flavors of CoD. I want to try the new Doom since I love single player modes, though I wasn't a big fan of Doom3...

Oh man....Doom and Quake. I was heavy into it as well back in the day. Played on a league team, once a week matchups....those were the days. My license plate even said "IQUAKE" LOL

The OP mentioned a Quake arcade game. I've never seen the standup version in the link, but when they first opened Gameworks in town years ago, they had a giant sit down version. Did anyone else ever try it? It was freaking cool. Head to head, one player on each side in a big captains chair and a huge screen. The controller was an oversized track ball for look and a few buttons for fire and jump. I used to sit there and play single mode, just waiting for someone to sit down on the other side :)

It wasn't there too long. It probably wasn't popular enough to make a bunch of money but it sure was neat.

I can always ask John Carmack if he knows of this. I've had frequent communication with him in the past.

I do recall a long time ago, that there may have actually been some form of Quake arcade machine, although it may have been a one off or fan made

I think the arcade version of Quake only appeared in a movie and was never really released

The arcade version of Quake exists. The arcade version of Doom is the fake that appeared in Grosse Point Blank.

I remember the first time hooking up Doom via modem to my buddy across town. We played while talking trash on the phone. I was blown away by the thought of that...

Crazy fun.
