Dont EVER EVER EVER leave your games in direct sunlight.

I seem to have the worst luck with breaking tubes. Today I was organizing my garage and a few games had to be pulled out on the driveway so I had room to work with. Come noon time, I didnt take into account that the sunlight changed directions. By 4:00, a beautiful 25" WG tube in my newest game had been destroyed by the heat of the sunlight. I didnt think something like this could be possible. Take my advice. Dont put your games where direct sunlight can hit them. This is gonna be the biggest bitch to replace.....

Ouch! That hurts. Sorry dude. Never seen that. Advice taken though here in the Southland.

WOW. I've never seen or heard of that happening.

Nice pic BTW, I like how you got the sun in the reflection. :/

what the....how is that possible? damn, sorry to see that man. one of my favorite games too.

Man, that sucks! Thanks for the warning! Are you sure it didn't happen while moving it?

Very unexpected, but sort of makes sense. I guess it is like the air in your car getting superheated when you leave the windows up in the summer. The tube could get really hot in the direct summer sun. There might have been an imperfection or something, but who wants to find out their tube has one. Sorry man. Good luck with the replacement hunt.

Now I need to go check the environmental specs of a tube.... :)

I wonder if it was a sudden change in temp or something? I've had a junk tube sitting outside for a long time and it's hit 103 here this past week.

tube

I have had 100s of monitors go through rapid temp changes and I have never had one crack. I would say it is more likely your neighbors kid with a BB gun shot it. Look at the crack real close and see if you can see an impact mark.

I am positive it didnt happen while moving. How the heat broke the thickest part of the tube is beyond me. Like VJ said, maybe there was an imperfectoin. But I had never heard of this happening and since I was prepared to replace the artwork anyway, I didnt take many precautions against sun damage. This is the last thing that I would have guessed.

Nope. I was outside all day and nothing ever came close to that machine.

Good call. My friend blew out his neighbor's car window with a BB gun once. We never said anything, and neither did they, I'm sure they had no idea what happened.

Edit: But the glass bezel is still intact

I looked through some monitor manuals until I found one that had an operating temp listed. Granted this was not being operated, but direct sun would push you way way over the line.

It said 40C which is only 104F. The closed up car example can get into the high 100s. Now we need a donor tube that is really burned to be put out in the sun to try and reproduce this.

Ouch, that is really lame. Thanks for posting here, though. It may prevent the same fate from happening to someone else's games.

or mabye the tube was already under stress from midajusted mounting an then the cab moved a little when heated up or some krrap.

in any event, that sucks, and ive never seen it happen either

Maybe it is the fact the monitor is exposed and angled down. In most games, the marquee hangover protects from sun and the monitor isn't at such a steep angle.

Either way, that is a complete freak occurrence.

But... you haven't lived until a piece of pin playfield glass spontaneously combusts in your hands without touching a darn thing.

I've had it happen.....luckily on a dead tube I was fixing to pitch though.
Same scenario, had been sitting where the sun had nicely superheated it.

Not something I have seen before, either, and I have left machines out in the heat for hours. Guess there is always a first time for things. That is a real bummer.
