So for the last few months I've been playing around with donor tv tubes.. I'm having a ton of success with newer black plastic case 19" tvs.. Seems as a majority are close to or perfect matches to k7000 chassis..

Even swapped a 25" tonight!!! Looks amazing..

I've replaced almost all of my 19" monitors with burn free tubes.. Now I just need more k7000s so I can offer them up locally. Wish I figured this out years ago.. Haven't had to do one yoke swap yet.. Plus I haven't swapped the degaussing coil.. Just use the one on the tv.. No fuse popping yet!

Can you share the make and model of the tv's and monitors you have used for the transplant success? Dr Fronkenstien would be interested.....

Info

I haven't been taking notes on which tvs work, as I'm only grabbing black plastic case 19" tvs.. Most if not all are built from 1989-1995
Magnavox, Quasar, toshiba, Samsung, Orion and some really weird off brands.. Do not bother with sony tvs!! Ive cracked open quite a few, none are worth bothering with. I also make sure they have a skinny neck before I take them, which you can see through the vents with a good flashlight.

Almost every 19" black plastic case tv has been a close to almost exact match.

The chassis for the 25" was a k7000..

I did just grab some older plastic wood grain tvs today.. If any of those are good, I'll post the info.. Got them for free and I'd like to find some fat neck tubes for 4600, 4900, and Go7s.. As I'm running out of k7000s

I still have that black plastic Panasonic in an upstairs bedroom. One of these days I'll take a peek at it and see if it might work. Keep us up to date on the great work!

I love hearing the success stories, but hate finding out the donor wasn't documented.

Local you seem to have really high success rate what was it? 1:3, I've got a 25" or 27" arriving monday (tho i have no spare chassis). You need to make a video for all us picture book types :D

Well done sir!

+1 to this. Video, video, video!

Documenting..

Yeah, I failed on documenting.. My problem is I get so excited to crack them open and take a yoke reading.. So I usually just toss the case in a pile and forget about it.. But, like I said before.. I'm only picking 19" tvs that have thin necks. As I was grabbing anything 19" I could get my hands on, and maybe 1 out of 5 was useful.. Now it's more 1 out of 2 or better.

A video, damn.. Heh.. Guess I'll set up the little vid camera I bought my wife for Xmas.. She prolly used it twice anyway.. Do you need HD? :)

If I do make a quick vid.. What exactly to you want to see?
1. Choosing and inspecting a tv (what to look for)
2. taking a reading from the yoke connector
3. Changing out the donor tv connectors, what to do with extra wires...
4. Testing and firing it up on a k7000 chassis

What I'm doing is the lazyman's tv swap.. I'm not dealing with yoke swaps (which are also easy). Just trying to easily find and replace out burnt tubes for my personal games and for friends.. There are many other ways to do it, but this is working for me.

#2 is good, but definitely #3 and #4.

Everyone basically wants to know what goes where when they hook it up. :D

Outside of my Sanyo 20EZs and several vector monitors, mine are G07, 4600, and 4900. (I have no K7000).

K7000

K7000 series chassis are the only ones I can show..

As all of my donor tv tube swap successes has been with those. I've tried a few Go7 tube swaps with yoke swap but have had mixed results.. So that's why I've focused on k7000, k7201, k7203 19" and 25".

I've got a ton of 4600s, 4900s, GO7s, and others.. Haven't found any drop in replacement tubes for those as of yet. I did find a 19" sharp monitor that can be used for Nintendo monitors, but havent had the chance to try it. Also found what I thought was an exact match for a GO7, but no dice.. Readings were right on, plus it was the correct neck.. Just didn't work.. Tube is weird though, instead of being grey or dark grey it's blue.. ??

I've lucked out with finding and rebuilding k7000s lately, so that's why I've been focusing on just that swap..

I've done tube swaps with regular monitors but never TV tubes. The screenburn on my games doesn't bother me bad enough, I guess.

Coming up on the 1 year anniversary of this thread and I am starting to tinker with tube swaps myself. Local, were you ever able to make the video you were talking about? Or are there any videos that have been created since last year?

I've done almost a hundred tube swaps, testing out generic chassis, classic chassis, even tried a yoke swap or two. It's not that hard until you get to convergence if you have to swap yokes.

I've posted my results from various stuff both over on RGVAC (does anyone use that anymore on usenet?) and here previously.

Many donors were documented in my donor TV list in my sig...I'm pretty sure Local413 sent several but if he (or anyone else) has any new ones I'd be glad to add to the list!

PS I do have a decent writeup on tube swapping on the same site as well (also linked in my sig). Only thing I left out of the writeup is yoke swapping, mainly because its a pain and not easy to document. Some day I'll do a video.

I have visited this site many times, thank you for that. I am trying to figure out a list of WG 25"s. Is there a list for those?

I haven't done any 25"s nor do I think anyone sent me info, but I'll add it in if anyone sends it. I believe as long as the donor TV isn't a flat-faced tube and/or a Sony...chances are most are good for 25" swaps.

I'm probably wrong, but I dont think there's a lot of variation on the sockets on the usual 25" tubes like there is on the 19's.
