I bought and untested board when I powered it up had it just garbage -- after reprogramming most of the roms (another thread o my ROM torubles!) that were bad reseating cables and chips. I now have what in the attached pictures

I just re-validated the roms cleaned the legs etc -- still all good -- screen the same

attached are some pictures. Is RAM the next likely error or something else?

I suspect the character rams on the video board (2P, 2R). Sometimes it can be
the gray cables between the board, but since some of your video ram looks good
sometimes and other memory locations are bad, i would suspect that.

Good call on the video ram -- when I disassembled the board stack -- someone had been hacking before on those 2 exact chips -- bigger the blob -- better the job kinda guy

Anyway 1 trace was broken on the front side as well maybe by me or the guy before me -- I socketted the 2 ram chips and put a jumper wire for the bad trace -- game looks pretty good now -- no more H's colors are off though. I think there something still wrong -- I'll have to check the roms again. Maybe 1 or 2 are flakey --I just reburned the same chips since I didn't have any 2532s (after a round of burning 2732's until I realized!!).

I guess I better get to capping that monitor before I go further on the board.

Thanks for the help!

Attached picture of what it looks like now

So I guess I don't need a cap kit! I thought I had a adjusted the monitor -- I guess not!

Colors are still off though Mario is all white even when he runs and Pauline is half invisible

I did pull the 2 on the CPU board and the 1 on the video board and cleaned the legs and put them back

I alos just puslled each rom and validated them just to be sure they didn't degrade from yesterday -- all were good

I don't think my programmer can read or wite those color proms -- I'll have to look. I surely have never burned anything but eproms thus far

PS I alos think its missing a sound when Donkey Kong stomps and makes the girders diagonal -- I have no stomp sounds the rest of the sounds that I think sound be there are. Is there any kind of test mode for this board?

Looks like at minimum 2N color prom is wrong and probably 2E and 2F color proms.
Are you sure this board had not been prior converted to another game like 8-ball,
ex-bike, those types? since you already needed to reprogram every eprom, it
sounds like had been converted to another game prior. If so, you need to also
replace the color proms. Prom 2N controls what sections of the screen are
what colors (sort of). Like DK on the high score save screen, scores 4 and 5 are
different colors than lines 1 2 3. credits is different color, etc. 2N is sort of
the mapping on location. 2E and 2F are more like the color palettes the game
can change. Give your HS screen has all lines 1-5 same color but first character
of some of those lines are different I would suspect and given all the colors are
wrong I would suspect 2E and 2F. Do those proms have the original DK stickers
on them? If not, the game was probably converted at some time.

could be -- a couple did check sum before I started -- so not everyone eprom was wrong -- that might explain it though

the proms do have hand labels on them

So I got another board and swapped 2e adn 2f and its was almost good but the bottom third colors was weird so I swapped 2n and now its all good!

So re-reading this I examined my hand written labels

"8B*2e" and "8B*2f" and no label on 2n

So these must be 8 Ball Action color proms -- by the 8B that was written on each

between the parts of the 2 I have 1 good set!
