So Im pretty new to this stuff so sorry if these questions seem trivial, but i recently got a really good deal on a DK cabinet, and ive been trying to restore it myself. Im having a blast but Im starting to get a little bit frustrated. Three issues.

1. not very often but every once in a while i hear what sounds like a little static shock coming from the monitors board or tube and then the monitor will kind of flicker.

2. While your playing and everything is going fine the sound that is made when mario dies keeps playing over and over. But not everytime.

3. on the elevator level all the "sprites" is that what they are called? moving elements, mario, flames, donkey kong, etc. go invisible.

Thanks in advance.

heres a few things I would check but others will have more knowledge...

is there a ground plug on the power cord? Everything plugged in on the inside? check connections.

sounds like a board issue. whats the voltage going to the board?

Some good tech info can be found here:

Sounds like the flyback causing the issue. It may be the HV finding its way and jumping to ground (frame of monitor, etc.). Check the flyback/wiring.

2. While your playing and everything is going fine the sound that is made when mario dies keeps playing over and over. But not everytime.

3. on the elevator level all the "sprites" is that what they are called? moving elements, mario, flames, donkey kong, etc. go invisible.

Sounds like a board issue for both of these. See some of the above links for additional help.

Like he said above, sounds like the flyback is arcing somewhere. Inspect it and see if theres any damaged wire insulation or cracks/charring on the flyback itself. As for the sprite and sound errors, try reseating all the socketed chips on the CPU board for starters. Probably a little corrosion/dirt that needs to be knocked loose.

I agree that it is the flyback. I had a Nintendo Sanyo monitor that did the same thing and replacing the flyback fixed it. If you have the 20-EZV you can get a new flyback for it. If you have the 20-Z2AW you are out of luck for now (unless you find a used one somewhere).

I know it kind of sounds like an idiot tip, but I'll give it anyway. Once when I reinstalled my PCB into the cab after having it apart, I noticed that all the characters were missing, but everything else was normal. I took out the board and checked the ribbon connectors, and sure enough one wasn't plugged in all the way. Anyway, it's probably not something that simple though.
