Donkey Kong side art question

Cheaper isn't always better. That digdug guy's artwork isn't even 100% accurate. Inaccurate side art = no purchase.

agreed! however, if there's no alternative and you want your machine to be finished, you have to go for it (or wait forever). but in this case, there are multiple options to get silkscreened art from, so i won't settle with inkjet prints :). thx for bringing this up!!!

No problem! I know how most of us on here are sticklers for detail and accuracy and I like it because it means that if the people who repro all the artwork and parts for games don't come with their A game, they won't be selling much,if any product.Fortunately for us,a majority of them do.:)

just got some art from a pro designer his ebay name is digdug!
great art at almost 1/2 the price of others....i think he only does ebay....
got a set of kong/kong jr/kong 3 from him and they were 45 a set!!!!

Yeah I got a set of Popeye side art from Digdug on ebay and it looks great! Hes a cool guy too...the artwork arrived damaged by the post office and he quickly sent out new ones no charge!

Super Pac sideart is not a decal. It was painted using stencils directly on the cabinet.

yes but gonna restore it using a decal side art as im not a good art or stencil person...the side of the cab is basically bare so i really have nothing to go with. i really dont care if its looks slightly different it will look much better than it does now, and im keeping it for my self so...

I hope you are okay with the wrong colors in your art.

Correct:

Colors seem way off. I understand this is much cheaper, but I don't understand what people aren't paying for the high quality work when it is available? I know if I'm doing a restore, I want my side art perfect.

Digdug's art looks like it does because he just downloaded it from here:
http://vectorlib.free.fr/DonkeyKong/

Unlike what pinkpot seems to believe, he didn't professionally design it, he just downloaded it.

I think its important to note that screen printed art is often done using films from the original art.

InkJet art is often a scan that has been reworked by the individual in illustrator.

Also Ink jet is a CMYK print process, meaning that 4 colors make up the color spectrum.

In screen printing they use spot colors to create the art.

I find it interesting is that people spend all of this money to get the artwork 'perfect'. The same person then uses paint out of a can from Home Depot/Lowes. They ROLL-ON latex paint made for drywall. It doesn't really look anything like the real thing, but the comment is always "It looks great!"

Somebody new to the hobby comes on here with sideart that isn't silkscreened and says the same thing: "It looks great!" Suddenly it is not good enough and there are a million reasons why they shouldn't use it. Wrong color, missing copyright, whatever. I am not saying that everybody should run out and buy cheap-ass artwork done by a 20 year old printer. I just think that sometimes a little perspective goes a long way.

The way you feel about artwork is the same way I feel about all of those poor baby blue Donkey Kongs and Popeye's slathered in dull, cheap paint with an orange peel textured surface. To me, that is ten times worse than inkjet artwork.

I guess that there are varying degrees of restoration, but if one thing has to be perfect, then so should everything else. I would hate to make somebody feel like they need to spend $250 on artwork and then tell them it is OK to grab a roller and a 10 dollar can of Glidden.

It is worth putting in perspective, that's all.

I think the issue is I would rather see people supporting the guys that do the high quality screened work. If we don't support them, then all we will have is cheap incorrect ink jet art.

"And for the record, I've purchased paint from Lowe's and it does look great"

I totally agree with you. I just hate to see people scaring away the newbs to the hobby. We were all there once at some point and we all have to start somewhere on the learning curve.

I don't see it as 'scaring newbs' so much as informing them. People shop with their wallets, if a cheap inkjet makes them happy then go for it. Wouldn't be my choice, but it's not my game. However, if you see something like what is referred to here and get the impression it's high quality and professionally designed I'd be thankful personally if someone pointed out that perhaps that wasn't the case. Lots of people are picky and want only screen printed and get super anal about stuff, lots more simply don't care and just want a cheap solution. Nothing wrong with either approach as long as you know what you're buying ahead of time.

Don't buy ebay off-art and expect to later sell the game for top dollar restored :)

In the case of the side art its the better of two options when restoring a cabinet.

I think it's important that you mention the preferred method of painting to keep it in context.
If your saying it shouldn't be painted at all then it's not really the same argument.
