Donkey Kong/Sanyo 20EZ issues: Please help!

LOL! Not saying this applies to the OP, but I've met a lot people in this hobby (usually mame'ing something) that think replacing a PC motherboard is advanced electronics experience.

You mean it's not? ;)

Seriously, I do have some common sense. Thanks for all the help everyone. I'll post more questions as they arise.

LOL. I've been doing PC work for 20 years and I still feel like a complete freakin' lost idiot when it comes to half of this stuff. Was "before my time" as a 30 year old. Our schools had already given up on stuff like basic electronics and moved on to more "important" subjects like word processing and touch typing for instruction.

*roll eyes*

Ok, after searching the site, I believe my flyback is going bad. The screen looks good, expect for the partial horizontal collapse, but I still occasionally get a "click" or a "spark" and then the screen "sputters" horizontally.

I've read that people suggest that you take off the flyback cage and look for the flyback arcing to ground. This can temporarily be fixed by applying silicone gel/caulk to any cracks int he flyback. I understand that this is only a temporary fix.

Some questions:

Should I discharge the monitor prior to removing the cage?

I will eventually replace the flyback I believe. When I do this, are there other parts that should be replaced at the same time? I'll do my cap kit then. Do I need to replace the HOT at the same time?

Do all aftermarket flybacks have the 2-part focus assembly like in this guide: http://www.cinelabs.com/sanyo/Sanyo_Install.pdf ? So, do people recommend cutting the cage, like suggested in this guide?

Anything else that should be kept in mind with flyback replacement?

Thanks all!
