Hey yall his is my first restore on the first game I bought. I got this Donkey Kong when I was 11 or 12. I bought it for $100 working and ready to go. I put it to use in a resauraunt and it quickly paid for itself. I have all ready took it apart and labeled my wire connections. Its not a bad cab and I have done alot of reasearch on here. I bought some bondo and sandpaper last night and I plan on trying to remove the sideart today. I will keep posting pictures, progress and material. Any tips would be great. Thanks.

Donkey Kong Restoration

I used my hair dryer this morning to remove the side art. Im sure a heat gun would have been faster, but my hair dryer is payed for.

Donkey Kong restore

I caleaned the glur residue with some Acetone and it worked real good. I have also sanded the cab down with my Porter Cable palm sander and 220 grit. I started the bondo this orning and realized I eally have no clue what Im doing with it, but I hoep it works out. Its taking quie awhile to dry and Im ready to start sanding. Today is 106 or 107 outside so Im probably going to wait untill tomorrow to sand it. It may take a little time with this step but Ill post pictures as soon as Im happy with it.

Donkey Kong restore

Thanks its not bad, allthough it does have more chips up the back edges than I would like but the corners are in good sape.

Oh that's heartbreaking looking at that cab, bringing back memories....I had one about ten years ago and and wound up losing it in a house fire mid restore. Can't wait to see how you bring that beauty back to life.

On a related note, a friend of mine has a DK he offered to give me that the previous owner converted to a Robocop. Would it be worth it to convert it back?

Also, I feel ya on the Bondo-ing....took me a while to get the hang of it. Just remember to do it in small intervals, as trying to Bondo everything at once is nearly impossible, given how quickly it solidifies. If you're doing corners, don't forget to shim them to create nice, tight angles. I've found that wooden paint stirrers (available for free/cheap at any hardware store) cut on a table saw and staplegunned into place works best. Also don't forget to use a Dremel to recut the T-molding grooves if need be.

Restore

Oh man thats rough, I would hate for somthing to happen to mine after what Iv done so far. I figured out not to do it all atonce because I tried that my first round with it. Lol. I also figured how how much hardner to add. I had a mishap where It never would dry. I didnt think of paint stirreres I was wondering about tha. Good tips, Thanks. Ill keep poting Im on the bondo still. I almost have one side finished off, then I think Im going to the front. Thanks again.

Just looking at your pictues in your first post...don't forget to make a new monitor support to replace the missing one from your cab.

You mean stapling them onto the edge so as to create a fence of sorts?
(Trying to picture it in my head)

Dk Restoration is BACK

Im working on the DK again after a year of waiting. I primed the black where the monitor sits and the top of the machine today.I just used some rustolium gray rattle can on this because I didnt want to fire up the compressor and sprayer for these little sections. I ran out of primer but I plan on putting a second coat on it later today If its dry. I should post pics soon.

DK

I got the top hald black areas primed. 2 and a half cans later. Lol. I put one coat of black on and Im waiting for it to dry.,

DK

Im moving right along on the black parts of the game. Hopefully within the next 2 or 3 days I should be finished with the black. Im nervous about running the spray gun on somthing like this. We will see how it goes. Ill post pics of the black when its finished. I still have to pick up some clear coat.

DK

The good news is that the black is done. But the bad news is I forgot to take pics before I started taping it off. So now Im about to order a new spray gun and get to priming. Ill post pics of that for sure. Hopefully I dont forget.
