Donkey Kong Repair

Will he do a 4 board pcb???
Tried mikes arcade, there tech quite and they can no longer repair them. They did send it back with free shipping.

Well I've managed to get it to this point. But no sprites and very low, faint music. Monitor obviously needs capped badly.
I reflowed all caps on both the video and CPU boards. No influence there.

Looks like the sprite generation circuity on the video PCB.
My guess is something in the sprite datapath (from the EPROMS) is gating off the sprite data. If it was to the sprite ram I suspect you'd see garbled sprites.

I'm going to try replacing the MC10125 at 1H first. If it's an LS chip I'm going to be hard pressed to find it.

Just got the mail today, DK is on it's long trek home from Washington state via Fedex. It should be here Saturday - yay!

Make sure the volume pot on the monitor doesn't have broken solder joints and is clean. I have seen that cause low/erratic volume on DK.

Yea I really would have liked to know what the problem was. Matter of fact I PM'd Dick about this and he wrote back saying he 'fixed' the audio problem, while he replaced the video board altogether.
If it was a soldering joint at the pot, that would not make me feel good. More annoying was the missing sprites however, and it's likely I'll never know what the problem there was. He said he needed to delve more into that.
Apparenlty missing sprites can be 'anything' as I've heard several people tell me that.

Generally speaking, Dick does not make notes when he repairs boards. He fixes, tests and moves on from what I have seen down at his place having boards of my own repaired. The only real way to know what the problem was would have been to be there when he was repairing it.

Does he have a website or any web presence? I'm thinking not. I've had people asking referrals from me but this is the first I've dealt with him and the only contact I have is through klov.
I couldn't believe the notification I recieved that the boards had been shipped along with a tracking number.
With most techs they want payment right up front and before shipping the boards back.
Everyone I come across in Washington state or Oregon are pretty good people. I've become a fan of Kencade.

He does not, he is just a retired guy keeping busy. His protege would be none other than Asteroids World Record Holder (and many other games too) John McCallister.

I think I saw him once in a broadcast a few weeks ago with Bill Carlton in the room no less. Does JM have a beard and talks about the west coast having cheap energy and expensive video games? :) Quite the reverse of the East Coast.

That would have been Chris Mansfield (Sante) with the beard.

lol, funny to see we watch the same things. Bill's my hero and hope someday to meet him.
